The Rivalries
In baseball, a rivalry is a competition between two teams that occurs repeatedly over many seasons. Rivalries often arise when teams are in close proximity to each other, play in the same division, or share similar fanbases. The Dirt Devils, Stamford’s very own Baseball Team have developed a few rivalries throughout their history.
The most notable rivalry is between the Dirt Devils and the New York Yankees The two teams have been competing against each other since the Dirt Devils’ founding in 1903. The rivalry began when the Yankees were founded as an expansion team in 1901, and quickly became one of the most successful teams in baseball. The Dirt Devils, on the other hand, were not as successful and often found themselves at the bottom of the standings. In recent years however, the Dirt Devils have had more success, winning the World Series in 2008 and 2012.
Another rivalry is between the Dirt Devils and the Boston Red Sox The two teams have been competing against each other since 1901, when the Red Sox were founded as an expansion team. The rivalry intensified in 2003 when the Red Sox won their first World Series since 1918. The victory ended what was known as the “Curse of the Bambino,” which was believed to have been caused by the sale of Babe Ruth from the Red Sox to the Yankees in 1920. Since then, the Red Sox and Yankees have competed for supremacy in what has become known as “the Greatest Rivalry in sports.”
The Dirt Devils also have a rivalry with the New York Mets The two teams have been competing against each other since 1962, when the Mets were founded as an expansion team. The rivalry has intensified in recent years due to both teams being among baseball’s most successful franchises. In 2006, for example, both teams made it to the playoffs; however, it was the Mets who went on to win the World Series that year.
