Get to Know the Team
The Drake Bulldogs men’s basketball team is composed of student-athletes who attend Drake University in Des Moines Iowa. The team competes in the Missouri Valley Conference of NCAA Division I. They are coached by Darian DeVries, who is in his first season as Head Coach of the Bulldogs. The team plays their home games at the Knapp Center on Drake’s campus.
The Bulldogs have a long history of success on the court, including winning the conference tournament championship in 2008 and 2017. In addition, several Drake players have gone on to have successful professional careers, including forward Gus Johnson and guard Gary Grant.

The Team’s History
The Drake Bulldogs men’s Basketball team has a long and storied history, dating back to their formation in 1906. The team has won 14 conference championships and made 15 NCAA tournament appearances. The Bulldogs have also produced 27 All-Americans, including two-time NCAA Player of the Year Hank Gathers.
The Team’s Rivalries
The Drake Bulldogs men’s basketball team is no stranger to rivalries. Some of their most heated rivalries are with the Missouri Valley Conference teams. The Bulldogs have had long-standing rivalries with the Creighton Bluejays the Illinois State Redbirds, and the Northern Iowa Panthers. More recently, the Drake Bulldogs have developed a rivalry with the Loyola Ramblers
The Drake-Creighton rivalry is the oldest and most intense of all their rivalries. The two teams first met in 1913 and they have been playing each other ever since. The rivalry was put on hold for a few years when Creighton left the Missouri Valley Conference but it was renewed when they rejoined in 2013.
The Drake-Illinois State rivalry is also a long-standing one. The two teams first met in 1908 and they have been playing each other almost every year since. This is one of the most evenly matched rivalries in all of college basketball with each team winning slightly more than half of the games they’ve played against each other.
The Drake-Northern Iowa rivalry is a more recent one, but it has quickly become one of the most intense in the Missouri Valley Conference The two teams first met in 1997 and they have been playing each other regularly since then.
