Leading the charge is head coach Jeff Capel, who has been with the team for four years. Coach Capel is a Durham native and a graduate of Duke University where he played basketball for four years before going on to coach at the collegiate level. He has brought his wealth of knowledge and experience to Durham Academy, helping to mold a young team into a strong contender in the state.

Coach Capel is assisted by two assistant coaches Michael Kleinschmidt and Jerry Goins. Coach Kleinschmidt has been with the team for three years and brings a wealth of experience working with young athletes. He is a former college athlete himself, having played basketball at Appalachian State University Coach Goins is in his first year with the team but has already made an impact, providing valuable insight and guidance to the players.

As the 2015-16 season comes to a close, the boys’ Varsity Basketball team at Durham Academy is looking back on a year of tremendous growth and success, with a record of 18-6. Head Coach Mike Cotter attributes much of the team’s success to the dedication and hard work of its players.

“Our guys have put in a lot of time and energy – in the off-season, in the weight room, on the court – to get better, and it’s paid off,” said Cotter.

Cotter said that although the team didn’t have any superstars, its balanced scoring attack – five players averaging in double figures – was key to its success. “We’ve had different guysstep up on different nights, and that’s been a big part of our success,” he said.

The team also benefited from improved defense and rebounding. “We put an emphasis on defense and rebounding from day one, and our guys have really bought into that,” Cotter said. “They’ve done a great job of working together as a team on both ends of the court.”

The team will lose five seniors to graduation, but Cotter is optimistic about next year. “This group has set a high standard for future teams to live up to, but I think we have the talent and the commitment to continue to improve next year and beyond,” he said.
