However, 1895 would be much better for the team as they rebounded to finish third place with an improvedrecord of 54-40. 1896 was another down year for franchise as they slumped backto last place with 33-51 record but 1897 saw them return to respectabilitywith 5th placed 82-47 finish.

In 1886, Reach hired Bill Shettsline to be his new manager. Shettsline had previously managed the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals (now known as the Minnesota Twins). Under Shettsline’s leadership, the team improved their record to 52-68 but still finished last place in 1886.
