This list comprises my top 5 Filipino baseball players of all time. These are players that have made significant contributions to the sport in the Philippines.
Babe Ruth
Babe Ruth is considered by many to be the greatest baseball player of all time. He played for 22 seasons, including his final season with the Boston Braves He was a member of seven World Series champion teams and is one of only two players to have their numbers retired by every Major League Baseball team.
Ruth began his career as a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox and had immediate success, winning the World Series in his first year. He then switched to playing outfield and became one of the most feared hitters in baseball history He set numerous records, including most career home runs (714), most career Slugging percentage (.690), and most career OPS (1.164). He was also an outstanding base stealer, stealing home plate 18 times in his career.
After his retirement from baseball, Ruth became involved in numerous charities, including the Babe Ruth Foundation which provides support for underprivileged children. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, and his legacy continues to this day.
Hank Aaron
Hank Aaron is a retired American Baseball right fielder who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1954 to 1976. Aaron is widely considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time. His record-setting 755 career home runs has since been surpassed by only four other players. He was also a very talented all-around player, winning three Gold Glove Awards and being named to 25 All-Star teams.
Barry Bonds
Barry Bonds is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants setting numerous batting records. He is currently the all-time leader in home runs with 762. He also ranks second in all-time walks, with 2,558.
Bonds was born in Riverside, California to a father who was a professional baseball player He spent his childhood and adolescence in San Carlos, California before moving to Encino, California where he attended Serra High School After graduating from high school he enrolled at Arizona State University where he played college baseball for three years. He then declared for the MLB Draft and was selected by the Pirates in the first round of the 1985 MLB draft
Bonds made his MLB debut with the Pirates in 1986 and quickly emerged as one of the game’s brightest young stars In 1988, he won the National League Most Valuable Player Award and helped lead the Pirates to a division title. He would go on to play 15 seasons with the Pirates, making seven All-Star teams and winning eight Gold Glove Awards
In 2001, Bonds left the Pirates and signed with the Giants as a free agent He would go on to play some of his best years with the Giants, winning four more MVP Awards and leading them to a World Series title in 2010. In his final season in 2007, Bonds became MLB’s all-time home run leader, passing Hank Aaron’s record of 755 career Home Runs He retired from baseball after the 2007 season and currently serves as a hitting coach for the Miami Marlins
Willie Mays
Willie Howard Mays, Jr. was born on May 6, 1931, in Westfield, Alabama. He was a professional baseball player from 1951 to 1973. He played most of his Major League career with the New York/San Francisco Giants (1951–1972), before finishing his career with the New York Mets (1972–1973).
Mays is considered to be one of the greatest all-around baseball players of all time. He hit for both power and average, stealing bases and making spectacular catches in center field. At age 20, he won both the Rookie of the Year Award and the National League Most Valuable Player Award. He was an All-Star for 24 seasons and a Gold Glove winner for 12 seasons.
Mays is one of only four players to have won both awards in the same year (1954). Mays is also one of only two players to win two MVP Awards (1964 & 1965) without winning a World Series championship. In 1999, he placed second behind Babe Ruth in The Sporting News’ “List of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players”, making him the highest-ranking living player at that time.
Stan Musial
Stan Musial is widely considered to be one of the greatest baseball players of all time. A slugger and first baseman, Musial played his entire 22-year career with the St. Louis Cardinals and was a three-time National League MVP. He was a member of the inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.
Ty Cobb
Ty Cobb is widely considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He played for the Detroit Tigers from 1905 to 1928, and is still the Tigers’ all-time leader in batting average hits, and runs scored He won 12 batting titles, and his .366 career batting average is the highest in Major League history.
Christy Mathewson
Christy Mathewson was born on August 12, 1867 in Factoryville, Pennsylvania. He played 17 seasons in major league baseball (MLB), all for the New York Giants He pitched for the Giants from 1900 until 1916, when he retired due to tuberculosis.
Mathewson is one of the five player inductees in the inaugural class of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. He was also inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum in 1974 and the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1989.
Walter Johnson
Walter Johnson was born in 1903 in Sacramento, California, to parents of Filipino descent. He was a star pitcher in the Major Leagues for 21 years, playing for the Washington Senators and the Cleveland Indians He retired with a record of 417 wins and 279 losses, and is considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time.
Honus Wagner
Honus Wagner is widely considered to be one of the greatest players of all time. He spent 21 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1897 to 1917. During his career, he won eight batting titles, was a member of four World Series championship teams and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
Born in Pennsylvania in 1874, Wagner began his professional career in 1895 with the Louisville Colonels of the National League He was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1896 and spent the next two decades with the team.
A versatile player, Wagner excelled at hitting, fielding and Base running He was one of the first five players inducted into the Hall of Fame and is still considered one of the best shortstops of all time.
