The Gators are coming off a 52-17 season in which they advanced to the College World Series for the fifth time in school history. They will look to replace some Key Players from that team, including first baseman Pete Alonso (12 HR, 53 RBI), second baseman Deven Marrero (6 HR, 37 RBI), and shortstop Richie Martin (3 HR, 47 RBI). Here is a look at the 2017 roster:

Pitchers

RHP Alex Faedo: The 2017 SEC Pitcher of the Year, Faedo was 14-1 with a 2.26 ERA last season. He was named a First Team All-American by Baseball America and Perfect Game/Rawlings and was a Second Team All-American by the NCBWA. He will be the Friday Night starter for the Gators this season.

LHP Brady Singer: Singer was 11-5 with a 3.21 ERA last season as a freshman. He will be the Saturday starter for Florida this year.

RHP Jackson Kowar: Kowar was 8-2 with a 3.04 ERA as a freshman last year. He will start on Sundays for the Gators in 2017.

New Additions to the 2017 Roster

The 2017 Florida Gator baseball team will look a little different than the squad that took the diamond last season. Gone are key starters like Buddy Reed J.J. Schwarz, Peter Alonso, and reptilian closer Michael Byrne In their stead are a bevy of young and fresh faces, including a number of talented freshmen. Here is a look at some of the new additions to this year’s roster:

Infielder Deacon Liput comes to Florida from Oviedo High School where he was a four-year starter and helped lead his team to a state championship as a sophomore. Pitcher Brady Singer was drafted in the first round by the Toronto Blue Jays out of high school but chose to play for the Gators instead. He joins fellow freshman pitchers Nolan Seminoff and Hunter McMullen as potential standouts on the mound.

Outfielder Nelson Maldonado is another name to Watch This Season The junior college transfer hit .360 with 10 home runs last year and has big-time power potential. Austin Langworthy is another outfielder who could see significant playing time as a freshman. The Georgia native hit .404 with eight home runs as a senior in high school

On the defensive side of the ball, catcher Mike Rivera returns for his senior season after hitting .274 with six home runs in 2016. He’ll be joined behind the plate by freshman Jonah Girand, who comes to Florida from Parkview Baptist high school in Louisiana.

The Gators will have their work cut out for them if they want to repeat as SEC champions, but with a crop of talented newcomers joining an already strong core they have the potential to be even better than last year’s squad.

Returning Players to the 2017 Roster

The 2017 Gator Baseball Team will feature a number of familiar faces, as a Number of players return from last year’s squad. Here’s a look at some of the key returning players:

Pitcher Alex Faedo is a big name to watch on the mound. The junior from Tampa was named a First Team All-American last year after going 10-2 with a 2.26 ERA. He’ll be counted on to be the ace of the staff again in 2017.

Junior catcher Mike Rivera is another player to keep an eye on. Rivera had a breakout season in 2016, hitting .308 with eight Home Runs and 39 RBIs. He’ll look to build on that success this year.

Infielder Deacon Liput is another player who had a strong 2016 campaign. The junior from Orlando hit .302 with six home runs and 42 RBIs while playing quality defense at second base. He’ll be looked upon to provide leadership for the Gators this season.

Gator baseball coaching Staff

Pat McMahon enters his ninth season at the helm of the Florida baseball program in 2017. The 2016 campaign saw the Gators earn a share of the SEC regular season title with a 19-11 record in league play. UF also made its 15th NCAA regional appearance and fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional Overall, the Gators posted a 41-22 record, their sixth consecutive 40-win season and 16th in school history.

In his eight years at Florida, McMahon has guided the Orange and Blue to five NCAA Tournaments, four NCAA Super Regionals two SEC Championships and one College World Series appearance. The Gainesville native has led UF to 302 victories during his tenure, an average of 37.8 wins per season, which is the second best mark by any Head Coach in school history.

Gator Baseball Results

The 2017 Florida Gators baseball team represents the University of Florida in the sport of baseball. The Gators compete in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Eastern Division of the Eastern Conference (SEC). They play their home games at Alfred A. McKethan Stadium on the university’s Gainesville, Florida campus, and are currently coached by Kevin O’Sullivan.

The Gators finished the 2016 season with an overall record of 52–17 (19–11 SEC), reaching as high as #2 in the national polls. They qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament as one of sixteen regional hosts. In the tournament, they defeated Bethune-Cookman and South Alabama to advance to a Super Regional for the fourth consecutive year. There, they lost to Florida State in three games.

2017 is here and so is Gator baseball! In case you haven’t been to a game in a while or are new to Gainesville, we thought it would be helpful to put together a guide on the 2017 team. This year’s squad is full of young, up-and-coming talent that will look to make a name for themselves on the diamond.

Pitching:
The pitching staff is anchored by junior right-hander Alex Faedo, who was named a preseason All-American by multiple publications. Faedo will be joined in the rotation by fellow juniors Dane Dunning and Brady Singer, as well as sophomore Jackson Kowar. The back end of the bullpen features senior Tyler Dyson and junior Michael Byrne, who will serve as the Gators’ closer.

Hitting:
The Gators will have no shortage of firepower at the plate either, as they return seven of their eight everyday Position players from last season. Leading the way offensively will be junior second baseman Deacon Liput, who was named a preseason All-SEC selection. Joining Liput in the infield are senior first baseman JJ Schwarz and junior third baseman Jonathan India. The outfield consists of sophomore Austin Langworthy, junior Nelson Maldonado and senior Ryan Larson. Catching duties will be split between seniors Mike Rivera and Mark Kolozsvary.

As you can see, there is a lot to be excited about with this year’s team. So make sure to get your tickets early and come out to cheer on the Orange and Blue!
