Grant Williams was born on September 21st, 1998, in Charlotte, North Carolina Williams attended Providence Day School in Charlotte, where he played basketball. As a senior, he averaged 22.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.5 blocks per game, and was named the Gatorade North Carolina Player of the Year. He was also a McDonald’s All-American.

Williams played college basketball for the Tennessee Volunteers from 2016 to 2019. As a freshman, he averaged 12.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and was named SEC Freshman of the Year. In his sophomore season, Williams averaged 15.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game and was named SEC Player of the Year. In his junior season, he averaged 18.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, and was once again named SEC Player of the Year.”

He declared for the 2019 NBA Draft after his junior season and was selected by the Boston Celtics with the 22nd overall pick.
