Gonzaga Basketball A Brief History

Gonzaga University men’s basketball began in 1906 with an intramural game between Students and Faculty. The next year’s contest was open to any student and faculty member who wanted to play. Gonzaga Basketball became an official varsity sport in the 1924-1925 season. They joined the Pacific Coast Conference in 1928, which later became the West Coast Conference. Few teams outside of California had heard of Gonzaga prior to 1950, but that all changed when they defeated 2nd ranked Saint Mary’s for the conference championship This was Gonzaga’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament In 1999, the Basketball Program reached new heights when they defeated Florida 73-72 in the Elite 8 to advance to the school’s first Final Four in history. The Bulldogs would eventually lose to eventual National Champion Uconn 67-62 in the National final game but this historical run solidified Gonzaga as a force on the national stage.

Since then, Gonzaga has appeared in every NCAA Tournament except one (2008). They have made it to at least the Sweet Sixteen six times (2000, 2001, 2006, 2009, 2015, 2017) and have advanced to the Elite Eight four times (1999, 2000, 2015, 2017). In 2017, they once again made history by defeating South Carolina 77-73 to reach their second Final Four in school history. The Zags would lose to North Carolina 71-65 in the National Championship game, finishing as National Runners Up.

The Rise of the Gonzaga Basketball Program

The Gonzaga Basketball Program has seen a meteoric rise in recent years Under the direction of Head Coach Mark Few, the Bulldogs have become a national powerhouse, appearing in the NCAA tournament every year since 1999 and reaching the Elite Eight in 2017. In addition to on-court success, the Gonzaga basketball program has also produced a number of NBA players including Future Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant

With all this success, it’s no wonder that Gonzaga basketball has become one of the most popular programs in the country. The Dominance of the Gonzaga Basketball Program

Since the late 1990s, the Gonzaga Basketball Program has been a force to be reckoned with in the NCAA. Mark Few took over as head coach in 1999, and the team has gone on to win over 80% of its games since then. The Bulldogs have made the NCAA tournament every year since 1999 and have advanced to the Sweet Sixteen six times, the Elite Eight three times, and the Final Four once. In 2017, they made it all the way to the National Championship game before losing to North Carolina

Gonzaga has produced a number of NBA players including Adam Morrison Kelly Olynyk, Kevin Pangos, and Domantas Sabonis. Under Coach Few’s guidance, the Bulldogs have become one of the best teams in college basketball year after year. The Future of Gonzaga basketball

Gonzaga’s Basketball team has long been a powerhouse in the college ranks, but they have never been able to breakthrough and win a National Championship This season, led by junior point guard Josh Perkins and senior forward Killian Tillie, the Zags have put together one of the most talented rosters in recent memory. With several NBA prospects on their roster, Gonzaga is poised to make a run at the title this season.

While Gonzaga has always been a basketball school, their recent success has brought newfound attention to the program. The school has seen an influx of new students in recent years and many of them are drawn to the school because of its basketball team

This season, the Zags are once again one of the favorites to win the NCAA tournament If they are able to win it all this year, it would be a historic moment for the school and its basketball program
