Three years later, Indiana State won its first NCAA Division I title.

The 1950s and 1960s were lean years for Indiana State Basketball as the team failed to make any postseason appearances. However, things began to turn around in 1970, when Head Coach Bob King led the team to its second NCAA Division I title. The following year, Indiana State made another appearance in the Final Four.

The championship years

The mid-1970s saw Indiana State become one of the dominant teams in college basketball Led by star player Larry Bird the team won back-to-back NCAA Division I titles in 1979 and 1980. The 1979-80 Season

It was the 1979-80 season and a young, relatively unknown Head Coach named Bobby Knight had just led the Indiana Hoosiers to a share of the Big Ten championship. The team entered the NCAA tournament as a number two seed, but they were seen as a dark horse to win it all. After all, they had only been to the Final Four once before, back in 1953.

The Hoosiers proved the doubters wrong, winning their first five tournament games by an average of almost 20 points. They then faced number one seed UCLA in the Championship game UCLA was coached by Hall of Famer John Wooden and they were defending champions, having won the title the previous year.

The game was close throughout, but Indiana came out on top by a score of 63-62. It was one of the most upsets in NCAA tournament history and it gave Coach Knight his first National Championship The Hoosiers would go on to win two more titles under Coach Knight, in 1981 and 1987. They are still the only team from the state of Indiana to win a men’s basketball National Championship

The Championship Game

On March 26, 1976, the Indiana Hoosiers became the NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball champions by defeating the Michigan Wolverines in the Championship game The game was played at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis, IN, in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 35,000 fans.

Despite being the heavy favorite to win the title, Indiana trailed Michigan by four points at halftime. In the second half, however, the Hoosiers took control of the game and outscored the Wolverines by eight points to win the game and the championship.

This was Indiana’s first ever Basketball Championship and it would be another 20 years before they won their next one. The 1976 team is considered one of the greatest college basketball teams of all time and their story is chronicled in the book “A Season on the Brink” by John Feinstein.

It has been several weeks since the Indiana State University basketball team clinched the National Championship and the campus is still abuzz with excitement. The Players

The 1998-1999 Indiana State University men’s Basketball team was one of the best in school history. That year, the team went 33-1 and won the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship The team was led by seniors Greg Graham and Jake Sullivan who were both named first-team All-Americans. Other Key Players on the team included juniors David Moss and Jamaal Tinsley, and sophomores Michael Sanford and Mike Essig.

The Coach

Basketball is a big deal in the state of Indiana. Every year, High School teams across the state compete for the chance to be crowned Indiana State Champions And every year, one team rises above the rest to take home the title.

This year, that team was the South Bend Central high school Tigers. Led by their coach, Mike Jones, the Tigers had a historic season, culminating in a victory in the state championship game.

Coach Jones has been with the Tigers for four years now, and in that time he has turned the team into a perennial contender. This year was his first year as Head coach and he led the team to a 25-3 record.

The Fans

The fans are a big part of what makes Indiana Basketball so special. They are some of the most dedicated and passionate fans in the country. They love their team and they love to support them.

The fans play a big role in making Indiana Basketball so successful. They create an atmosphere that is electric and full of excitement. They are always there to support their team and help them win.

The Media

The media has been a big part of the Indiana State Basketball story. Bob Hammel, sports editor of the Bloomington Herald-Telephone, was the first to give the Sycamores some ink. His column on March 14, 1977, called head coach Bill Hodges “a potential national coach of the year.” The next day, after Indiana lost to Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament’s Southeast Regional final, ISU’s players were all smiles as they answered questions from reporters in Louisville.

“I think people are starting to realize that we’re a good team,” said Larry Bird “We could have gone further in the tournament, but I’m not upset. I’m proud of what we accomplished.”

“It feels like we won the championship,” said Ted McClain. “The way the people back home are carrying on, you’d think we did.”

“I feel like I’m in a dream right now,” said Mike Gibson. “I keep thinking about those shots I made against Michigan State and Marquette. It’s just hard to believe.”

The Future

It’s been just over a month since the Indiana State University basketball team made history, winning the school’s first-ever men’s NCAA Division I Basketball Championship Led by star player Romeo Langford, the team dominated the tournament, winning six games in a row to take home the trophy.

Now that the dust has settled, it’s time to take a look back at what made this team so special and what the future holds for Indiana State basketball

First and foremost, this team had star power. Langford was one of the best players in the country and he showed it throughout the tournament. He averaged 19.2 points per game and was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four. He also had some help from his teammates, including senior guard Jordan McRae, who averaged 17.8 points per game during the tournament.

But it wasn’t just about offense for this team. They were also one of the best Defensive Teams in the country, thanks in part to their 6’9″ center Aljami Durham. Durham was a force on defense, averaging 2.6 blocks per game during the tournament.

The future looks bright for Indiana State Basketball With Langford and McRae leading the way, they have a chance to make more history next season. And with Durham anchoring their defense, they should be in contention for another championship.
