Iuk baseball is on the Rise: A Look at the Program’s History

IUK Baseball is on the rise. With a new Head Coach a new facility, and a renewed commitment to recruitment, the program is primed for success in the coming years.

But where did IUK baseball come from? And how did it become one of the most successful programs in the state?

IUK baseball started in the fall of 1972 with just six players. The team was coached by Jimmie Taylor, who would go on to coach the team for four years. Taylor was a former minor league player and had coaching experience at the High School and collegiate levels.

In its inaugural season, IUK baseball went 6-4. The team’s best player was Mike Rose, who hit .500 with four home runs and 12 RBIs. Rose would go on to be named an All-American twice and play professional baseball for 10 years.

In just its second season, IUK baseball had its first winning season, going 9-3. The team’s success continued into the 1974 season, when it won 11 games. That year, IUK also had its first player drafted into Professional Baseball pitcher Randy Johnson Johnson would go on to have a Hall of Fame career, winning five Cy Young Awards and throwing a perfect game in 2004.

IUK Baseball continued to find success in the late 1970s and early 1980s under head coach Jerry Hamrick. In 1979, the team won 13 games and made its first appearance in the NJCAA World Series The team would return to the World Series in 1981 and 1983 before finally breaking through with a win in 1984. That year, IUK went 47-15 and won the NJCAA World Series becoming only the second team from Indiana to do so (the other being Vincennes University).

Since then, IUK baseball has been one of the most successful programs in Indiana. The team has made 10 appearances in the NJCAA World Series and has produced numerous professional players, including Major League All-Stars Scott Rolen and Curt Schilling

In the past few years, the IUK Baseball Program has made great strides in its journey to becoming a top Collegiate Baseball destination. The Coaching Staff has worked tirelessly to recruit top-notch talent, and the team has seen success on the field as a result. But perhaps the most important factor in the team’s recent success is the brand new, state-of-the-art facility that they get to call home.

The IUK Baseball Complex is a $5 Million Dollar project that was completed in the summer of 2018. The complex features a brand new Turf Field 6 batting cages, 4 bullpens, a weight room, and a high-tech video room. The facility is absolutely stunning, and it’s clear that no expense was spared in its construction.

Since moving into their new home, the IUK Baseball Team has been on a tear. They won their conference tournament in 2019 and qualified for the NCAA Division II World Series And with their new facility, they’re only going to continue to get better and better. If you’re a fan of college baseball keep an eye on IUK. They’re one of the programs on the rise, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

Since the inception of the baseball program at IUK, the team has seen a steady increase in their Win Totals Last year, the team finished with a record of 18-11, good for their best season in program history. Head Coach Tyler Crandall is looking to build off of that success in 2020, and has put together a schedule that he believes will prepare his team for a run at the conference title

The non-conference portion of the schedule is highlighted by a trip to Florida to take on some of the top teams in Division II baseball The Kaisers will also host a number of home games against Division I foes, including Purdue and Indiana State Coach Crandall is confident that his squad can compete with anyone on their schedule, and is excited to see what they can do in 2020.

IUK Baseball is on the rise and has seen a recent influx in talented coaching staff The program’s new Head coach Kevin Long played professional baseball for 16 years before coming to IUK. While he has only been coaching for a few years, his experience and knowledge of the game have helped to elevate the program.

Coach Long is joined by assistant coaches Brian Gausman and Jared Bailey. Both coaches bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table. Coach Gausman played Division 1 baseball at Indiana State University before being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles He spent four years in the Orioles’ organization before retiring and beginning his coaching career. Coach Bailey also played Division 1 baseball, at Wright State University. He then went on to play professional baseball for six years before joining IUK’s Coaching Staff
