In 2018, Owens signed a two-way contract with the Houston Rockets and spent most of his time with their G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. In 2019, he was traded to the Salt Lake City Stars but was later waived by the team.

Despite his collegiate success, Owens was not selected in the 1957 NBA Draft He did not give up on his dream of playing Professional Basketball however. He spent one season with the Harlem Globetrotters before finally getting his chance in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons in 1958-1959. Owens appeared in 12 games for the Pistons during his rookie season, averaging 3 points per game

The following year (1959-1960), Owens played for both the Pistons and the Chicago Packers (now known as the Washington Wizards). He appeared in a total of 37 games between the two teams, averaging 4 points per game

Owens’s NBA Career came to an end after just two seasons. He did not give up on basketball entirely, though; he continued to play semi-pro ball until he was well into his 40s.
