Jim Thome was one of the best players of his generation. A slugger with a sweet swing, he retired with 612 home runs eighth on the all-time list. But his most valuable contribution to the game may be the baseball cards he inspired.
Thome’s first Big League card was produced by Upper Deck in 1991. It’s a simple design, featuring a black-and-white photo of a young Thome in a Cleveland Indians uniform. The player is shown mid-swing, about to launch one of his trademark long balls. The card is unnumbered, but it’s easy to find in packs of Upper Deck cards from that era.
This card is significant for two reasons. First, it’s the first Big League card for a Future Hall of Famer. Second, it represents the beginning of a new era for baseball cards Prior to 1991, Topps held an exclusive licence to produce Baseball Cards But that changed when Upper Deck entered the market with its high-quality product. The company would go on to produce some of the most iconic baseball cards of the 1990s, including several for Thome himself.
The Jim Thome rookie card is thus an important piece of baseball history It’s also a great investment, as Thome cards are becoming increasingly popular as he approaches induction into the Hall of Fame If you’re looking to add this card to your collection, you can expect to pay around $50 for a mint condition version. But it will be worth every penny.
