John Harrell Basketball: Drills

Practicing shooting is one of the most important things a basketball player can do to improve their game. But, just stand-ing around shooting isn’t going to make you a better shooter. You need to mix in some drills to really work on your craft. Here are a few of our favorites:

1) The Pop-Up Drill: This is a great drill for working on your form and getting up lots of shots in a short period of time. You will need two people for this drill. One person will be rebound-ing the ball and the other will be shooting. Set yourself up about 10 feet from the basket in an area where you have plenty of room to move around. Begin by shooting the ball, then quickly catching your own rebound and popping it back up as quickly as possible. Try to shoot as many shots as you can in 30 seconds and then take a 30 second break. Repeat this 5 times.

2) The Spot Shot Drill: This drill is perfect for working on your game-time shooting percentage Start by finding five spots on the court that are about 15 feet away from the basket (you can mark them with cones if you want). Once you have your spots picked out, start at one end and shoot the ball from each spot, making sure to keep track of how many shots you make out of five. Then move to the next spot and repeat the process until you have shot from all five spots. Try to beat your score each time you do this drill.

3) The free throw Drill: This one is pretty self explanatory but it’s important not to overlook the importance of free throws! Start by shooting 10 Free throws then take a 30 second break. Repeat this 5 times for a total of 50 Free throws Keep track of your percentage so that you can see how much you improve over time.
