Both Hickman and McGuirl will have to sit out the 2020-21 season due to NCAA transfer rules, but will be eligible to play in 2021-22.
Hickman averaged 12.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game last season for Liberty. He shot 42.9 percent from the field and 37 percent from three-point range
McGuirl averaged 10.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game last season for Cincinnati. He shot 39 percent from the field and 36 percent from three-point range.
The Transfer Portal
In recent years the transfer portal has become an increasingly popular way for college basketball players to find new homes. The portal is a database maintained by the NCAA that allows athletes to list themselves as transfer candidates. Once their name is in the portal, other schools can contact them about potentially transferring.
Kansas State has added several talented players via the transfer portal in recent years including Xavier Sneed ( formerly of Houston), DaJuan Gordon (formerly of UNLV), and Isaiah Maurice (formerly of TCU). All three have made an immediate impact for the Wildcats.
The transfer portal has also been a source of frustration for some coaches, as it can be difficult to keep track of which players might be leaving your program. Nonetheless, it remains an important tool for building a successful college basketball team
New Talent
The NCAA’s transfer portal has become a staple in the world of college basketball since its inception in 2018. The portal allows players to put their name in the database and be contacted by any school that is interested in them.
Kansas State men’s basketball is no stranger to the portal, as Head Coach Bruce Weber has used it to his advantage in recent years This off-season, Weber and his staff added two new players to the roster via the portal, as graduate transfers DaJuan Gordon (Kansas) and Nijel Pack (UNC-Asheville) both chose to come to Manhattan.
Gordon is a 6-foot-4 guard who averaged 9.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game last season for Kansas. He will have one year of eligibility remaining and will give the Wildcats a much-needed scoring punch from the perimeter. Pack, meanwhile, is a 6-foot-1 guard who averaged 15.0 points, 4.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game last season for UNC-Asheville. He will have two years of eligibility remaining and will give Kansas State another ball handler and playmaker on the offensive end of the floor.
Both Gordon and Pack are expected to make an immediate impact for Kansas State next season as they look to make a return to the NCAA tournament after missing out on postseason play last year.
K State’s Roster
K State’s roster is expected to see some changes this offseason as the team looks to add talent via the transfer portal The Wildcats have already added a few players, including former Kansas Jayhawk guard Sam Cunliffe. Cunliffe will have to sit out the 2020-21 season due to NCAA transfer rules, but he will have two years of eligibility remaining. K State is also in the mix for several other high-profile transfer prospects, including Virginia Tech guard Landers Nolley II and UNC Charlotte guard Jordan Shepherd
The Portal’s Effect
In recent years, the Transfer Portal has become a significant factor in college basketball The portal is a database that contains the names of all College Basketball players who are looking to transfer to another school. Players can enter their name into the portal at any time, and once they do, their current school is notified. The player then has two weeks to decide whether or not they want to remain at their current school or transfer to another one.
The Transfer Portal has had a big impact on Kansas State basketball. In the 18-19 season the Wildcats had four players enter their name into the portal, and all four ended up transferring to other schools. This left Kansas State with a big hole to fill on its roster.
For the 2019-20 season Kansas State was able to add several new players via the Transfer Portal These newcomers made an immediate impact, helping the Wildcats to a 21-10 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament
The transfer portal has changed the landscape of College Basketball and it looks like it is here to stay.
Other Schools
In addition to the new recruits coming in via the freshman class, K State has also added some talent via the transfer portal. Miles Bridges from Purdue, is a 6’6″ guard who should be able to provide some scoring punch for the Wildcats. Tristen Wallace, a 6’5″ forward from Oregon State is another transfer who should be able to contribute right away. Aric Holman, a 6’10” center from Mississippi State rounds out the group of transfers who will be eligible to play for K State this season.
The Future
K-State men’s basketball coach Bruce Weber announced today that the team has added two new players via the transfer portal. The first is senior guard Davion Bradford from St. John’s, who averaged 13.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game last season. The second is junior forward Isaiah Maurice from UNLV, who averaged 7.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game last season.
“We’re excited to add two guys with experience at the Division I level,” Weber said in a press release “Davion is a talented guard who can score and rebound, while Isaiah is a long and athletic forward who can block shots and stretch the floor.”
Both players will have to sit out next season due to NCAA transfer rules, but will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2020-21 season.
The NCAA
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a member-driven organization dedicated to ensuring that student-athletes have a positive and fulfilling experience in college athletics. The NCAA transfer portal is a database that allows college athletes to register their intent to transfer to another school.
In order for a transfer to be eligible to compete at their new school, they must meet certain academic and athletic requirements set forth by the NCAA. These requirements vary depending on the athlete’s sport and division level.
In order for a basketball player to be eligible to play at their new school immediately, they must meet the following criteria:
-The player must have graduated from their previous school;
-The player must have completed an undergraduate degree if they are transferring to a Division I or II school;
-The player must have been enrolled full time at their previous school for at least one academic year;
-The player must have earned a minimum GPA as specified by the NCAA’s Division eligibility requirements; and
-The player cannot have already used up their four years of eligibility.
Players who do not meet all of the above criteria may still be eligible to play basketball at their new school if they receive a waiver from the NCAA. Players can request a waiver for various reasons, such as if they are transferring due to circumstances beyond their control (e.g., family illness) or if they can demonstrate that they will be playing at a higher level than they were previously.
If you are thinking about transferring schools, it is important to consult with your current coach and/or athletic director first. They will be able to provide you with information about your specific situation and what options may be available to you.

The Game
In the game of basketball winning isn’t everything--it’s the only thing. That’s why, when a team falls short of their goals, they often look to add new talent via the transfer portal.
The Transfer Portal is a database that allows College Basketball Players to declare their intention to transfer to another school. It’s become increasingly popular in recent years, as more and more players look to take advantage of the NCAA’s rules regarding player movement.
In the past year alone, over 700 players have entered their name into the portal. And while not all of them will end up transferring, it’s clear that the trend is on the rise.
One of the schools that has been active in the transfer market is Kansas State The Wildcats have added four new players via the portal this offseason, all of whom are expected to make an immediate impact.
The most notable addition is forward Xavier Sneed, who averaged 11.1 points and 5.1 rebounds per game last season at Missouri State He’ll give Kansas State a much-needed boost on the wing, and should help them compete for a spot in the NCAA tournament next season.
The other three players Kansas State added via the transfer portal are guard DaJuan Gordon (formerly of Pepperdine), forward Jayce Johnson (formerly of Utah) and guard Dunkan Kistler (formerly of North Dakota State). All three are expected to contribute right away and add depth to a Kansas State team that is looking to make some noise in March.
