Phipps played four years of college basketball at Baylor, redshirting his freshman year. As a sophomore, he averaged 3.8 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while playing in all 34 games for the Bears. Phipps’ junior season was cut short due to injury, but he bounced back as a senior and averaged 9.4 points and 4.6 rebounds per game while playing in 33 games. He helped lead Baylor to the NCAA tournament Sweet Sixteen in 2017.
Following his senior season, Phipps went undrafted in the 2017 NBA draft but signed with the Dallas Mavericks Summer League team. He impressed during Summer League play and earned a spot on the Mavericks’ G-League affiliate, the Texas Legends.
