Lauren Hamm was born in Los Angeles California. She began playing basketball at the age of six. When she was eight, she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma. She underwent treatment and was declared cancer-free.
Despite her illness, Lauren Hamm continued to play basketball and went on to play for the University of Connecticut Huskies. She helped the team win the National Championship in 1995. After graduation, Lauren Hamm played for several professional teams in Europe and Australia. In 2000, she was diagnosed with another form of cancer, this time Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She underwent treatment and once again, she was declared cancer-free.
Lauren Hamm’s experience with cancer made her realize that there were not many resources available for young girls who were dealing with the disease. So she founded the Lace Up 4 Lauryn Foundation, which provides support and resources for young girls who are dealing with cancer. Lauren Hamm is a role model for young girls because she has overcome obstacles in her life and has achieved success.

Lauren Hamm, a 6-foot-1 forward from Durham, North Carolina has been a voice for the voiceless since she was a child.
The only child of two deaf parents, Hamm grew up learning American Sign Language (ASL) and became an advocate for the deaf community at an early age. When she was just 10 years old, she started a petition to get ASL classes added to her elementary school curriculum. And she didn’t stop there.
In High School Hamm founded the first ever ASL club and helped start a deaf awareness week at her school. She also gave speeches about deaf culture and awareness at local organizations and events.
Hamm’s advocacy work continued in college, where she was a four-year starter on the basketball team at Gallaudet University the world’s only university designed for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. While she was there, Hamm helped create an ASL dictionary app and started a mentorship program for young girls who are deaf or hard of hearing.
After graduation, Hamm founded Sisterhood Sports Academy, a Basketball Camp for girls who are deaf or hard of hearing. The camp teaches girls not only how to play basketball but also how to be confident and independent young women.
Hamm’s advocacy work has inspired many people, both inside and outside of the deaf community. In 2015, she was named one of Glamour magazine’s “35 Game Changers Under 35” and in 2016 she was inducted into the National Deaf Sports Hall of Fame
Despite all her accomplishments, Hamm remains humble and is quick to credit her parents for her success. “They have always been my biggest advocates and my biggest supporters,” she says. “I wouldn’t be the person I am today without them.”
