The origins of basketball and how it made its way to Livingston

Basketball is a sport that has its origins in the United States It was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891, and quickly spread in popularity across the country. In the early 1900s, basketball began to make its way to other parts of the world, including Canada.

Livingstone College is a historically black college located in Salisbury, North Carolina The college was founded in 1879, and its first basketball team was formed in 1903. The team played its first game against a local High School and won by a score of 2-1.

Livingstone’s Basketball team experienced great success in its early years, winning several championships within the state of North Carolina In 1925, the team made its first appearance in the National Tournament where it finished as runner-up.

The program continued to be successful over the next few decades, winning more championships and making more appearances in the National Tournament Today, Livingstone’s basketball team is a Division II program that competes in the Central Collegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

The first intercollegiate game was played against Rutgers in 1898, and Livingston won 24-22. This began a long rivalry between the two schools that continues to this day. In the early years of the rivalry, Livingston had the upper hand, winning 14 of the first 20 games between the two schools.

Livingston joined the Middle States Collegiate Athletic Association (MSIAA) in 1902, and won the MSIAA championships in basketball in 1904 and 1905. The 1904 team finished with a perfect 12-0 record, and is considered one of the best teams in Livingston history.

Livingston continued to compete against Rutgers and other schools in the area throughout the early years of the twentieth century. In 1925, Livingston joined forces with Rutgers and other schools to form what is now known as the Big Ten Conference. The conference competed in various sports, but basketball was always one of its most popular offerings.

Livingston had some success in conference play in its early years, but it wasn’t until 1949 that it won its first conference championship That team, led by conference MVP Joe Trentacosti, went on to win 28 games and make it to the NCAA tournament for the first time ever. Unfortunately, they lost their opening game to eventual National Champion Kentucky.

Despite that early setback, Livingston has continued to be a force in college basketball over the years. It has won 13 conference championships and made 17 NCAA Tournament appearances since 1949. It has also produced a number of NBA players including Rick Barry, Butch Beard, and Karl Malone

Livingston has a very strong Basketball Program with both boys’ and girls’ teams regularly qualifying for the State Tournament In recent years the girls’ team has had more success, winning back-to-back state championships in 2017 and 2018. The boys’ team has also been very successful, making it to the state semifinals in 2017.

Looking to the future, Livingston basketball looks poised for continued success. The girls’ team will be led by senior point guard Lizzy Harrison, who has already verbally committed to play at the University of Connecticut The boys’ team will be led by junior center Malik Johnson, who is receiving interest from several Division I colleges. With two talented teams and a rich history of success, Livingston basketball is sure to be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come.
