A Brief History of Lockport Baseball

Lockport baseball has a long and proud tradition dating back to the 19th century. The first organized team in Lockport was the Niagara Athletic Club, which was founded in 1877. TheNiagara Athletic Club played its home games at the foot of Ontario Street, near the present site of the Niagara County Courthouse. In 1878, the Niagara Athletic Club merged with the Lockport Athletic Club to form the Lockport baseball club The Lockport Baseball Club played its home games at Lake View Park, which was located on what is now West Avenue.

The first professional baseball team in Lockport was the Lockport White Sox who were members of the New York-Pennsylvania League from 1914 to 1917. The White Sox played their home games at West Side Park, which was located on what is now East Avenue.

In 1919, a group of local businessmen formed the Lockport Colinettes, an amateur Baseball Team that competed in the Niagara Frontier League The Colinettes played their home games at West Side Park.

In 1926, another group of local businessmen formed the Lockport Reds, a semi-professional baseball team that also competed in the Niagara Frontier League. The Reds also played their Home Games at West Side Park.

In 1930, yet another group of local businessmen formed the Lockport Cubs, an amateur baseball team that competing in the Empire State League. The Cubs played their home games at East Side Park, which was located on what is now Locust Street.

Throughout its history,Lockport has been home to many great baseball teams and players. In recent years however, interest in baseball has declined and there are no longer any organized teams in Lockport.
