Luther Women’s Basketball Defeats St. Thomas in Season Opener

The Luther College women’s basketball team opened their season with a victory over St. Thomas, defeating them 72-64.

The Luther College women’s Basketball team defeated St. Thomas 84-79 in their season opener The Norse got off to a hot start, leading by as many as 15 points in the first half. St. Thomas fought back in the second half and took the lead with just over two minutes remaining. Luther regained the lead with a basket by freshman Sydney Spencer with 1:14 left in the game and held on for the victory. Spencer led the Norse with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Sarah Holtz added 19 points and eight rebounds. The win gives Luther a 1-0 record on the season.

In the Season Opener the Luther College women’s basketball team defeated St. Thomas 93-81. The game was tight throughout, with 10 lead changes and the score tied eight times.

Luther was led by junior Emily lasers, who had a game-high 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-8 from three-point range Lasers also had four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the victory.

Sophomore Ally Wojo also reached double figures for the Norse, scoring 15 points to go along with six assists. Junior Maddie Salo added 11 points and senior Becca Hittner chipped in 10.

The Norse shot 50 percent (36-of-72) from the field and 41 percent (9-of-22) from three-point range in the victory. Luther also forced 23 turnovers, resulting in 25 points.

Highlights

The Luther College women’s Basketball team opened its season with a 66-51 victory over St. Thomas in the Regents Center.

It was a back-and-forth affair early on, with neither team leading by more than four points in the opening quarter. The Norse took control in the second quarter, however, outscoring the Tommies 20-9 to take a 36-23 lead into halftime.

Luther maintained its lead throughout the second half, but St. Thomas would not go away, cutting the deficit to single digits on several occasions. The Norse held firm, however, and came away with the15-point victory.

Senior Ashley Gestring led the way for Luther with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Madison Wickman chipped in 16 points.

Rincker also had five rebounds, four assists and three steals in the game. Freshman forward Ellie Schneegaas chipped in with 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

For St. Thomas, senior guard Emily Kloncz led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Katelyn Ferry added 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

The Luther College women’s basketball team defeated St. Thomas 53-47 in their season opener. The Norse were led by senior Emily Mescher who had a game-high 18 points. Luther led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but St. Thomas would not go away quietly and made it a one-possession game with under two minutes remaining.

The Norse were able to close out the game by making their Free throws down the stretch and improving to 1-0 on the season. Luther will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Crown at 2:00 p.m.

The Luther women’s Basketball team defeated St. Thomas in their season opener 71-51. This is the first time in 15 years that the Norse have won their season opener.

The Norse were led by junior Kari Fitzpatrick with 19 points. Fitzpatrick was 4-for-6 from three-point range. Senior LizzieRunning Deer chipped in 14 points, while senior Allie Ostrander had 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Norse will take on Hamline at home on Tuesday, November 5th at 7:00pm.

St. Thomas Women’s Basketball Schedule

Luther College’s women’s Basketball Team defeated St. Thomas in their season opener on November 9th. The game was a rematch of last year’s conference championship which Luther won. This year, the game was played at St. Thomas’ home court and the Tommies were looking for revenge.

The game was close throughout, with neither team leading by more than six points. Luther took a slim lead into halftime, but St. Thomas came out strong in the second half and took a brief lead midway through the period.

Luther responded with a 6-0 run to retake the lead, and they held on for the rest of the game to win by a final score of 55-52. Junior guard Brooklyn Artman led the way for the Norse with 16 points, while senior center Emily Mescher added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The victory was a big one for Luther, as they begin their quest to defend their conference title against a strong St. Thomas team. The Norse will look to build on this win as they take on another conference opponent, Augsburg, on November 12th.
