The Early Years

The history of Lynchburg Baseball dates back to the early years of the sport. The first recorded game in Lynchburg took place in 1856, when the Lynchburg Athletic Club played against the Richmond Athletics. The two teams played again the following year, with Richmond winning both games. In 1858, the Lynchburg 9 joined the Virginia Convention, a league which also included teams from Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Petersburg. The 9 went undefeated in league play that year and were crowned Virginia champions.

Following the success of the 1858 season, more Lynchburg teams began to crop up. In 1860, the Lynchburg Unions and the Lynchburg Triumphs formed. The Unions were particularly successful, winning 23 games and losing just 3. However, all baseball activity in Lynchburg came to a halt with the start of the Civil War in 1861.

After the war ended in 1865, baseball slowly began to make its way back to Lynchburg. In 1866, the Lynchburg Resolutes were formed and became one of the most successful teams in Virginia. They won 31 games and lost just 7 over the course of three seasons. During this time, other teams in Virginia begun to take notice of Lynchburg’s success on the diamond and soon several other teams from around the state began playing games against each other.

The First Professional Team

The first professional team in Lynchburg was the Lynchburg Hill Climbers, who played in the Virginia League from 1909 to 1914. The team was named for its location on top of a hill overlooking the town. The Hill Climbers were a farm team for the Pittsburgh Pirates and their games were often broadcast on Pittsburgh radio station KDKA.

In 1915, the Hill Climbers moved to the Carolina Association, where they became the Lynchburg Hornets. The Nets Won the League Championship in 1916 and 1917 before moving back to the Virginia League in 1918. They returned to the Carolina Association in 1919 and won another league title in 1920.

The Hornets moved back to the Virginia League in 1921 and became known as the Lynchburg Lewises, after their owner, Rube Lewis. The Lewises won the League Championship in 1922 and 1923. After Lewis sold the team in 1924, they became known as the Lynchburg Phillies, after their new owner, Harry Truman Philsen. The Phillies won the league championship in 1925 and 1926.

After the trucking company went out of business, the team was sold again and became known as the Lynchburg White Sox after their new owner’s favorite team The White Sox won the league championship in 1930 and 1931.

The team’s name was changed again in 1932, this time to the Lynchburg Athletics, after their new owner’s favorite team The A’s won the league championship in 1932 and 1933 before moving to Portsmouth, Virginia, where they became known as

The team was affiliated with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1909 to 1917 and the Boston Red Sox from 1918 to 1955. The franchise played in the Virginia League from 1909 to 1914, the Carolina League from 1915 to 1917, and the Piedmont League from 1918 to 1955.
