The history of Magnolia Baseball dates back to the late 19th century when the Game of Baseball was first played in the city of Seattle. The first professional baseball team in Seattle was formed in 1891, and the first game was played at Lake Union Park. In 1900, a wooden grandstand was built at Lake Union Park, and the following year, the ballpark was renamed Magnolia Park after the nearby Magnolia neighborhood.
In 1907, a new concrete and steel grandstand was built at Magnolia Park, and the ballpark became known as Magnolia baseball stadium The new grandstands were designed by architect John Graham, who also designed several other iconic Seattle landmarks such as the Space Needle and Pike Place Market.
Over the years, Magnolia baseball stadium has undergone several renovations and upgrades. In 1938, lights were installed at the stadium so that night games could be played for the first time. In 1977, another round of renovations were completed which included adding more seating and modernizing concessions and restrooms.
In 1999, a $100 million renovation project was completed which added a retractable roof to the stadium to protect fans from rain and snow. The renovation project also added suites and club level seating, as well as a new video scoreboard.
Magnolia Baseball Stadium is truly a historic landmark in the city of Seattle. It has been home to Major League Baseball for over 100 years and has seen some of baseball’s greatest players come through its gates. If you’re ever in Seattle, be sure to check out this iconic ballpark!
