The team started off the season strong, winning their first 11 games. They then suffered their first loss of the season to unranked Colorado State They bounced back from this loss and went on to win 23 straight games. The team entered the NCAA tournament as the number one seed in the Midwest region. They cruised through the first two rounds, defeating Jackson State and UMass. In the Sweet Sixteen they faced a tough Indiana team led by future NBA Star Mike Bibby. The Jayhawks won a close game to advance to the Elite Eight.
In the Elite Eight, they faced off against Kentucky, who was also led by a future NBA star in PG Tony Delk. The Jayhawks won another close game to advance to the Final Four for the first time since 1993.
In the Final Four, they faced off against Utah, who was making their first ever appearance in the Final Four. The Jayhawks won yet another close game to advance to their first National Championship game since 1988.
In the National Championship game, they faced off against an experienced Arizona team led by future NBA Stars PG Mike Bibby and SG Miles Simon. The Jayhawks dominated from start to finish and won 79-68 to win their first ever National Championship!
