Wes Johnson – Head Coach
Johnson enters his seventh season as head coach of the Bears in 2020. He has guided Mercer to two NCAA regional appearances, including a historic Super Regional run in 2014, and four regular season conference championships. Johnson has been named Southern Conference Coach of the Year three times, most recently in 2019. Overall, he has compiled a 257-174 (.597) record at Mercer.

Under Johnson’s leadership, 25 Mercer players have gone on to play professional baseball with 14 of those being drafted, including four in the top-10 rounds. In 2019, he guided utility man Kyle Frankoff to become just the second player in program history to be drafted in the first 10 rounds when he went No. 8 overall to the Chicago Cubs

Prior to his time at Mercer, Johnson served as an Assistant Coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, The Citadel from 2007-13. During his time with the Bulldogs, The Citadel posted 30 or more wins five times and won an Southern Conference regular season championship in 2009. The team also made back-to-back NCAA regional appearances in 2010 and 2011 – the only two trips to regionals in school history – while setting a school record for wins (42) during the 2010 campaign.

Johnson is a graduate of The Citadel where he was a four-year letter winner for the Bulldogs from 2002-05. He still ranks among The Citadel’s career leaders in pitching appearances (3rd – 101), games started (tied for 4th – 35) and strikeouts (7th – 208). He was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year after posting an 8-2 record with a 3.42 ERA during his first season with the Bulldogs
