The history of the Mercyhurst hockey program

Founded in 1997, the Mercyhurst Hockey Program has been a NCAA Division I varsity sport for 17 years. The team plays its home games in the Mercyhurst Ice Center, a 3,000-seat arena that opened in September of 1999. The Mercyhurst Lakers are a member of Atlantic Hockey and have won two conference championships (2008, 2011). In addition, the Lakers have made seven appearances in the NCAA tournament

The tradition of excellence that is Mercyhurst Hockey began with its first Head Coach Rick Gotkin. Under his guidance, the Lakers posted a record of 173-135-23 (.557) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times (2002, 2004, 2005, 2007). In 2007-08, Gotkin’s final season at Mercyhurst, the team won its first Atlantic Hockey Championship and made its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2005.

In 2008, Andrew Murray was named the second head coach in program history. In his nine seasons at the helm of the program, Murray has led the Lakers to a record of 193-166-30 (.535), two Atlantic Hockey championships (2011, 2012), and five NCAA tournament appearances (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014). In 2012-13, he guided the team to its best season in program history as they set school records for wins (27), conference wins (18) and winning percentage (.750).

The rich tradition of Mercyhurst Hockey has been established over 17 years and continues to grow each season. With two conference championships and seven NCAA tournament appearances in program history, the future looks bright for Mercyhurst Hockey.
