Rumors and speculation

While the Detroit Red Wings have been front and center in the NHL offseason news with their coaching change and speculation surrounding potential trades, the other Michigan-based NHL team has been relatively quiet.

The 2016-17 season was a successful one for the Red Wings who made the playoffs for the 25th consecutive season. They were eventually ousted in the first round by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins

In the offseason, Detroit made headlines by hiring former St. Louis Blues Head Coach Ken Hitchcock to replace Jeff Blashill behind the bench. The move comes after Blashill led the Red Wings to a 34-36-12 record last season, missing the playoffs for the first time since 1990.

Hitchcock, who won a Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999, is known for his defensive style of play. He’ll look to instill that same mindset in a Detroit team that allowed 2.94 goals per game last season, which ranked 23rd in the NHL.

The Red Wings have also been linked to several trade rumors this offseason, most notably involving defenseman Mike Green and forward Gustav Nyquist. Green is entering the final year of his contract and carries a cap hit of $6 million, while Nyquist is signed through 2019-20 with a cap hit of $4.75 million.

Despite all of the rumors, Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland has said that he’s not looking to make any “bigSplashes” this offseason and is content with the team’s current roster.

Meanwhile, up in Traverse City, things have been relatively quiet for the other Michigan-based NHL team – The GRand Rapids Griffins.
After winning their second Calder Cup championship in franchise history last season, head coach Todd Nelson and his staff have been hard at work preparing for another run at hockey’s top minor league prize.

Nelson will once again be relying on a mix of veteran leadership and young talent as he looks to guide the Griffins back to glory in 2017-18. Among those returning are forwards Matthew Ford (16 goals) and Eric Tangradi (15 goals), who will provide a boost to an offense that averaged 2.67 goals per game last season (19th in AHL).
defensively, Grand Rapids will once again be anchored by veteran defenseman Nathan Paetsch (3 goals, 18 assists), who will be joined by newcomers Joe Hicketts (1 goal, 5 assists) and Robbie Russo (2 goals, 9 assists).
