Mike Rooney began his professional Baseball Career in 1914 with the Toledo Mud Hens of the minor league American Association. He played three seasons with Toledo before being called up to the Major Leagues by the Detroit Tigers in 1917. He made his Major League debut on April 11, 1917.

Rooney was a member of the Tigers from 1917 to 1924. He was traded to the Chicago White Sox in 1925. He played for the White Sox from 1925 to 1928. He finished his Major League career with the St. Louis Browns in 1929 and 1930.

Rooney was one of the best hitters in baseball during his career. His lifetime batting average was .298. He hit over .300 eight times in his career. He had a career-high batting average of .342 in 1922. He also hit 47 home runs and drove in 177 runs that season.

Rooney retired from baseball after the 1930 season. He died on January 23, 1966, at his home in Fort Lauderdale Florida.
