Mississippi State Baseball’s season comes to an end

The Longhorns scored two in the top of the first and held on for a 5-3 victory in the deciding game of the College World Series Championship round. With the win, Texas claims its seventh national title in program history, and first since 2005.

Mississippi State got on the board with a run in the bottom of the first, but Texas answered with a run in the top of the second to extend its lead to 3-1. The Bulldogs cut the deficit to one with a run in the bottom of the third, but that’s as close as they would get.

Texas added insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings, and that proved to be enough as Mississippi State was unable to muster any more offense.

The loss brings an end to a successful season for Mississippi State which won a school-record 52 games en route to its first College World Series appearance since 2007.

The Longhorns take down the Bulldogs in the College World Series

Texas (19-2, 3-0 SEC) struck for three runs in the first inning off Mississippi State starter Will Bednar and never trailed in the game. The Bulldogs (12-9, 0-3 SEC) answered with a run in the bottom of the first, but Texas scored two more in the top of the second to extend its lead to 5-1.

Mississippi State got one back in the bottom of the second on an RBI triple by Logan Tanner but Texas once again pushed its lead to four with a pair of runs in the top of the third.

The Bulldogs rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut their deficit to one, but Texas reliever ColeVaas closed out the game with two scoreless innings to seal the victory for the Longhorns.

With the loss, Mississippi State drops to 12-9 overall and 0-3 in SEC play. The Bulldogs will return to action Wednesday when they host Southeast Missouri State for a midweek matchup at Dudy Noble Field. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.

The Bulldogs got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the first inning. However, the Longhorns responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first. From there, the Longhorns never looked back, as they took control of the game and never relinquished their lead.

The Longhorns were led by their offense, which was clicking on all cylinders. All nine hitters in the lineup had at least one hit, and seven different players had at least one RBI. The Longhorns’ ability to string together hits was the difference in the game, as they out-hit the Bulldogs 12-7.

On the mound, Texas starter Cole Hunt pitched well enough to earn the victory. Hunt went six innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter. The Longhorns’ bullpen was also strong, as they shut down the Bulldogs over the final three innings.

With the win, Texas improves to 22-4 on the season and remains atop the Big 12 standings. Mississippi State falls to 21-5 with the loss but remains in second place in the SEC West.
