What to Expect from the Newcomers
The 2019-2020 season will be an exciting one for the MIT men’s Basketball team The team has a lot of new talent this year, including five first-year players. Here’s a brief look at each of the newcomers:
Harrison Tucker ’23 is a 6’5” guard from Dallas, TX. He was a three-time all-district selection in High School and was named district MVP as a senior. Tucker is a versatile player who can shoot and drive to the basket.
Noah Johnson ’23 is a 6’8” forward from Rockville, MD. He was named first-team all-county and second-team all-metropolitan as a senior in high school Johnson is a very good shooter and rebounder.
Jared Asher ’23 is a 6’5” guard from Los Angeles CA. He was a four-year varsity starter in high school and was named team MVP as a senior. Asher is an excellent shooter and has very good ball handling skills.
Ethan Peck ’23 is a 6’7″ forward from Glastonbury, CT. He was named first-team all-conference as a junior and senior in high school Peck is an excellent shooter and rebounder who can also play inside if needed.
Maximilian Wortmann ’23 is a 6’10” center from Berlin, Germany. He played for the German U19 national team last summer and was named MVP of the U19 European Championships Division B tournament. Wortmann is an excellent shot blocker and rebounder who can also score inside.
A Closer Look at the Returning Players
As we take a look at the returning players on the roster, it’s important to remember that this is a very young team. Only three of the returnees are upperclassmen, and only two of those are scholarship athletes. As a result, experience could be an issue for the Minutemen this season.
In the backcourt, sophomores Trey Davis and Jabarie Hinds will be looked to for leadership. Davis is coming off a strong freshman campaign in which he averaged 8.2 points and 3.1 assists per game He’ll once again be asked to run the offense, and with another year of experience under his belt, he should be up to the task. Hinds will look to build on a solid freshman season in which he averaged 5.5 points per game He’ll need to be more consistent this season, but has the potential to be one of the team’s best scorers.
The frontcourt is where things get really young for the Minutemen. Freshmen Rashaan Holloway and Malik Hines will likely see significant minutes, as will sophomore Luwane Pipkins. Holloway is a big body who can provide some much-needed defense and rebounding in the post. Hines is an athletic wing who can score in a variety of ways. Pipkins is a versatile guard/forward who can also provide some scoring punch off the bench.
The Key to the Season
The key to the season will be the performance of the newcomers. With only two returning starters, the team will rely heavily on its freshmen and sophomores.
The team’s biggest strength is its frontcourt. With four players 6’9″ or taller, the team has a significant size advantage over most of its opponents. Additionally, all four players are versatile and can contribute in a variety of ways.
On the perimeter, the team will look to its experienced guards to provide leadership. junior guard Marcus Smart is the team’s best player and will be counted on to score, distribute the ball, and play tough defense. Fellow junior guard Terry Rozier is also a key contributor, as is sophomore guard R.J. Hunter.
If the team can come together and play up to its potential, it has a chance to be very successful this season.
The schedule
The schedule for the upcoming season has not been released yet, but when it is, you can be sure to find it here. The roster is full of talented young athletes who are looking to make a mark on the program. Stay tuned for more information on the team as they prepare for what promises to be an exciting season.
The non-conference games
The non-conference games are always a nice warm-up for the conference season. This year, the Basketball Program at MIT will be facing some tough competition. The roster looks like this:
G/F – Jimmy Butler – 6’7″ – Senior
G/F – Mike Muscala – 6’11” – Junior
C – Luke Harangody – 6’8″ – Senior
F/C – DeJuan Blair – 6’7″ – Sophomore
G/F – Austin Daye – 6’10” – Freshman
SG – Jerryd Bayless – 6’3″
This team is led by three seniors, two of whom are captains. Jimmy Butler and Mike Muscala are both four-year starters, and Luke Harangody has been a starter since his sophomore year. These three have been key to the team’s success, both on and off the court. They are also joined by two other experienced players, DeJuan Blair and Austin Daye. Jerryd Bayless is the only freshman on the team, but he has already made an impact with his scoring ability. This roster gives the team a good mix of experience and youth.
The conference games
The conference games are where the teams really start to show their true colors. The teams that have been playing well all season tend to rise to the top, while the teams that have been struggling tend to sink to the bottom. This is where the Mit Basketball Roster comes in. The Mit Basketball Roster is a compilation of all the players on each team, their position, their year in school, and their recent stats. This allows you to see at a glance who the best players are on each team, and who might be a liability.
