Of course, one of the best things about the All Star Game is that it gives fans a chance to see some of their favorite players team up with each other. Usually, players are put on opposite teams based on their conference (Eastern Conference or Western Conference). However, this year there will be a new format for the teams. What to expect from the game
The National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star game is a basketball exhibition game hosted every February by the National Basketball Association (NBA), matching a mix of the league’s star players who are drafted by the two players with the most votes. Each team consists of 12 players, making it 24 in total. It is usually held on the Sunday of the NBA All-Star Weekend. The 2017 NBA All-Star Game will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The format of the game has changed several times since the inaugural event in 1951. The Eastern Conference and the Western Conference—formerly organized as divisions—each selected a team of five starters via fan balloting. Fan voting persisted until 1957, when Cincinnati Royals center Bob Cousy and Milwaukee Hawks guard Richie Guerin were elected as co-captains of the East squad. Fan voting returned in 1962; fans radialilty voted for three frontcourt starting spots and two backcourt starting spots; thereafter, each conference held its own separate All-Star starter ballot except in 1971 when during Jerry West’s one season as Head Coach he vetoed fan ballots to start all Lakers: Gail Goodrich, Norm Van Lier, Archie Clark and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Dwyane Wade would later start alongside Lebron James in 2005 under similar circumstances); from 1971 to 1974 fans only voted for two frontcourt All-Star starters (Coaches selected reserves). In 1975, both rosters were increased to 10 starters each with again fan voting selecting five starters from each conference; in 1979 a twelfth player was added to each roster giving fans a vote for 10 starters plus two additional spots that were chosen by head coaches
