2020 NBA All-Star Rising Stars Challenge Format
The 2020 NBA All-Star Rising Stars Challenge will feature a U.S. vs. the World format. Ten first- and second-year NBA players from the United States will be matched up against 10 first- and second-year players from outside the United States
This will be the sixth year that the game has been played in this format. In previous years, the game has featured rookies vs. sophomores, but with an increased focus on global talent in the NBA, it made sense to switch to this format in 2015.
The game will be played on Friday, February 14th at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois as part of All-Star Weekend
2020 NBA All-Star Rising Stars Challenge Rules
The 2020 NBA All-Star Rising Stars Challenge will take place on Friday, February 14, 2020 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. In order to be eligible for selection to the game, players must have been born on or after January 1, 1996 and have completed their NBA Rookie season. A total of 10 first-time All-Stars will be selected for each team.

A total of 10 first-time All-Stars will be selected for each team. The 20 All-Star starters will be determined by the fans (50%), current NBA players (25%) and a panel of Basketball Media (25%). The starters will then select their teammates for the game regardless of conference affiliation.
2020 NBA All-Star Rising Stars Challenge History
Since the inaugural event in 1994, the NBA All-Star Weekend has featured a game pitting young up-and-coming players against each other. Initially known as the Rookie Challenge, it was renamed the Rising Stars Challenge in 2012. In 2019, the game format was changed to a Team USA vs. Team World format.
2020 will feature a return to the traditional U.S. vs. World matchup. The game will take place on Friday, February 14th at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois.
Rising Stars Challenge history:
1994: The inaugural Rookie Challenge was played on Friday, February 11 during All-Star Weekend in Minneapolis, with Shaquille O’Neal leading a team of first-year players to a 143-118 victory over Chuck Person and second-year players. Shaq was named MVP after scoring 34 points, pulling down 9 rebounds and blocking 5 shots.
1995: The second Rookie Challenge was held on Friday, February 10 during All-Star Weekend in Phoenix with Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway leading the sophomore squad to a 112-102 victory over Grant Hill and the rookies. Penny had game highs of 30 points and 8 assists en route to being named MVP.
1996: Once again held on Friday during All-Star Weekend (this time in San Antonio), this year’s Rookie Challenge saw Tim Duncan put up 30 points and 15 rebounds to lead the sophomores to victory over Damon Stoudamire (30 points) and the rookies by a score of 96-93. Duncan took home MVP honors for his efforts.
