The Newton North Tigers are coming off a historic season in which they won their first ever state championship Coach Smith has instilled a new culture of winning and the players have bought in. The team is looking to make another run at the title this year and they have the talent to do it. Follow their journey here.

Introducing the new era of Newton North Basketball

Just four years ago, the Newton North basketball team was in a rebuilding year. They had a new coach, and only three seniors on the roster. But that didn’t stop them from going all the way to the state championship game.

Now, those same three seniors are leading the team once again. And this time, they’re determined to win it all.

“We’ve been through a lot together,” said senior captain Mikey Bartolomucci. “We’ve grown up a lot since our freshman year. And we’re ready to take this team to the next level.”

The Tigers have already made some noise this season, beating perennial powerhouse Catholic Memorial in December. And with a deep roster that includes eight seniors, they have the experience and talent to make a serious run at the state title.

“This is a special group of guys,” said Head Coach John Calipari “They have the potential to do something special this season. We just have to go out there and take it one game at a time.”

The rebuild begins: a new Coaching Staff and system

It’s a new era for Newton North Basketball After winning just four games last season, the Tigers have a new head coach in Mark Mitchell, and he’s brought with him a new system and a new attitude.

Coach Mitchell comes to Newton North after successful stints at Westford Academy and Acton-Boxborough, where he compiled a career record of 200-54. He inherits a team that went 4-18 last year and has just eight players on the roster, but he’s confident that they can turn things around.

“Our goal is to be a competitive team in the league and make the playoffs,” Mitchell said. “I think we have the talent to do that. We just need to gel as a team and play within our system.”

The Tigers will be relying heavily on their three seniors: co-captains Matt Lee and Ben Haldeman, and Nick Ward They will be looked to for leadership and production on both ends of the floor.

On offense, Newton North will look to run more of an up-tempo style, utilizing their speed and athleticism to create easy scoring opportunities in transition. On defense, they will look to pressure the ball and force turnovers with their quickness.

It will be a rebuilding year for the Tigers, but with a new coach and a new system in place, they are optimistic about the future of the program.

In recent years the Newton North basketball team has undergone a massive change in the way it recruits and trains its players. Previously, the team focused primarily on local players, often ones who had been with the program for several years. However, this changed when former Head coach Jason Bartell took over in 2016.

Since then, Bartell and his staff have placed a greater emphasis on recruiting players from outside of Newton. This has led to the arrival of several new players each year, many of whom have gone on to have successful careers at the college level.

While some may view this new recruiting strategy as a gamble, it has clearly paid off for Newton North. In just four years under Bartell, the team has won two State Championships and is widely considered to be one of the best basketball programs in Massachusetts.
