The History of Western Illinois Basketball

Since the team’s founding in 1899, Northwestern Illinois Basketball has experienced various levels of success. The early years of the program saw little consistent success, with the team only managing a handful of winning seasons in its first 50 years. This all changed in the 1950s, when the team began to string together a series of winning seasons. This trend continued into the 1960s, culminating in Northwestern Illinois’ first ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in 1968. The team has since made four additional tournament appearances, with their most recent coming in 1996.

In recent years the Western Illinois Basketball Program has fallen on hard times. The team has only managed one winning season in the past 20 years and has not made an NCAA Tournament appearance since 1996. Despite this, there is reason to believe that the program is on the rise. In 2017, the team hired new head coach Mark Lindsay, who has helped to bring in a number of talented recruits. With this influx of talent, coupled with Lindsay’s coaching acumen, it is only a matter of time before Western Illinois Basketball is once again competing at a high level.
