The History of Notre Dame Field Hockey
Notre Dame Field Hockey is rooted in a long and storied tradition of excellence. The program has produced some of the sport’s biggest names and brightest stars, while also establishing itself as a national power.
The history of Notre Dame Field hockey begins in the early 1900s, when the sport was just beginning to gain popularity. The first Notre Dame team was formed in 1901, and the squad quickly rose to prominence, winning several national championships in the years that followed.
The Irish continued to dominate the sport throughout the early part of the 20th century, winning 16 national championships between 1901 and 1970. The program hit a bit of a lull in the late 1970s and 1980s, but it rebounded in a big way in the 1990s, claiming six more national titles.
Notre Dame has continued to be one of the nation’s elite Field Hockey programs over the past few years, winning two morenational championships in 2000 and 2001. The Irish are always among the nation’s top teams and they have their sights set on adding even more hardware to their already impressive collection.
The Notre Dame Field Hockey Program
Notre Dame has a long and proud tradition of success in field hockey dating back to the early days of the sport. The Fighting Irish have won eight national championships and appeared in the NCAA tournament 27 times, more than any other school. Notre Dame has also produced 12 Olympic field Hockey Players including four-time gold medalist Cindy Lampen-Kingsley.

We are committed to providing our student-athletes with the best possible experience, both on and off the field. We are proud of our Academic All-Americans and our student-athletes who go on to successful careers after graduation. We are also committed to giving back to the community, through our involvement with local schools and youth programs.

The Notre Dame field hockey Team
Notre Dame Field Hockey is a tradition of excellence. The team has won 14 national championships, the most in NCAA history. They have also been to 27 Final Fours, more than any other team in NCAA history. Notre Dame field hockey is one of the most successful programs in all of college athletics.
The team is currently coached by Beth Bozman, who has been at the helm for 12 seasons. Under her leadership, the team has won 11 conference championships and made 8 trips to the NCAA Tournament including 5 trips to the Final Four. Bozman is a two-time National Coach of the Year and she has led Notre Dame to 14 conference championships and 27 NCAA tournament appearances.

The Notre Dame Field Hockey Tradition
Notre Dame’s Field Hockey program has been a tradition of excellence for more than 50 years. The Irish have made 27 appearances in the NCAA tournament won 20 conference championships and have had 12 Olympians on their rosters. Under the direction of Head Coach Stephanie De union, the Irish have appeared in seven NCAA tournaments, won four conference championships and had four Olympians on their rosters. With a proud tradition of success, Notre Dame is poised to continue its tradition of excellence in the years to come.

Notre Dame Field Hockey is one of the most tradition-rich programs in all of college athletics. With 25 NCAA tournament appearances, 22 conference titles and two national championships, the Fighting Irish have a storied history of success.
Looking to the future, Notre Dame is poised to continue its tradition of excellence. The Fighting Irish have a young, talented core of players that includes Sarah Kubik, who was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman in 2016. With head coach Christine Sheppard at the helm, Notre Dame is poised to compete for championships for years to come.

-Marybeth Freeman (’84), two-time Olympian and member of the U.S. field Hockey Team that won a bronze medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics
-Christine Daae (’09), current member of the Irish national team and two-time Olympic medalist (bronze in Beijing 2008, silver in London 2012)
-Kelli Stack (’11), professional ice hockey player for the CWHL’s Boston Blades and member of the United States national team
