The History of Oceanside Baseball
Baseball is America’s favorite pastime and has been played in Oceanside for over 100 years. The first recorded game took place in 1893 between the Oceanside Athletic Club and the San Diego Athletic Club. The game was played on a sandlot on Ocean Street between Pacific Street and Wisconsin Avenue.
The Oceanside Athletic Club team was made up of local business owners and community leaders, while the San Diego team was made up of professional players from around the country. The game was considered very important at the time, as it was one of the first organized games in the region.
Fans came out in droves to watch the game and it quickly became a popular event in the city. From there, baseball grew in popularity and became an integral part of Oceanside culture. Numerous teams sprung up, including semi-professional teams that would playagainst teams from other cities.
One of the most popular teams was the Oceanside Krushers, who played in the semi-professional Sunset League from 1937 to 1941. The Krushers were a force to be reckoned with, winning the League Championship three times. They were so popular that they even caught the attention of Hollywood, and were featured in several movies including “The Pride ofthe Yankees” (1942) and “It Happens Every Spring” (1949).
Sadly, the Krushers disbanded during World War II due to many of their players enlisting inthe military. However, baseball continued to be popular in Oceanside throughout the war years, with games being played at local high schools and parks.
After the war ended, baseball experienced a resurgence in popularity. In 1946,the semi-professional Coast Highway League was formed, with four teams from Oceanside competing against each other. This league continued until 1960 when it eventually disbanded due to declining interest.
Baseball has been played continuously in Oceanside since 1893 and shows no signs of slowing down. It remains an important part of city culture and continues to bring people together from all walks of life
