Ohio State Ice hockey A Brief History

Ohio State ice hockey is one of the best college hockey teams in the Midwest. The team has a long and proud history, dating back to 1896.

The team first began play in 1896 and was one of the founding members of the Western Intercollegiate Hockey Association (WIHA). The WIHA was one of the first college hockey conferences in the country and was very competitive. Ohio State won the conference championship in 1909, 1910, 1913, 1914, and 1915.

In 1922, the WIHA dissolved and Ohio State joined the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The CCHA was an even more competitive conference and Ohio State won championships in 1925, 1926, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1947, 1949 , 1950 , 1952 , 1953 , 1955 , 1957 , 1958 , 1959 , 1960 , 1961 , 1962 , 1963 , 1964

The team then had a period of success in the 1970s when they made it to the NCAA Division I Men’s ice hockey Tournament seven times between 1970 and 1979. They made it to the Frozen Four three times during this period but never won a National Championship

The team then went through a bit of a slump in the 1980s and early 1990s but they have rebounded in recent years They have made it to the NCAA tournament five times since 2000 and have won two CCHA championships since 2006.

The Ohio State Buckeyes currently sit atop the Big Ten Standings with a 19-5-4 record. They are coached by John Markell, who is in his seventeenth season as the Buckeyes’ Head Coach The team is led by captain Kevin Miller, a senior forward from Plymouth, Michigan. The Buckeyes have qualified for the NCAA Tournament ten times under Markell, including five trips to the Frozen Four.

In order to have a successful ice Hockey Team you need strong leadership from your coaches. Ohio State is fortunate to have two great coaches leading our team. John Markell has been the head coach of the Ohio State Ice Hockey Team since 1996. In his time here, Coach Markell has led the Buckeyes to 19 winning seasons, 14 playoff appearances, and 4 conference championships Under his guidance, the Buckeyes have also won 3 conference tournament titles and made 2 NCAA Frozen Four appearances.

Assistant coach Steve Rohlik joined Coach Markell on the bench in 2007. In his time at Ohio State Coach Rohlik has helped lead the Buckeyes to 7 winning seasons, 5 playoff appearances, and 2 conference championships. He has also been named conference Assistant Coach of the year 3 times.

Together, these two coaches have built a strong foundation for our Ice hockey program. They have instilled a winning culture within our team and have developed a strong bond with our student-athletes. We are lucky to have them leading our team into the future!
