The Rebirth of Oregon Baseball
Oregon baseball is on the rise under new head coach Mark Wasikowski. In his first two seasons, Wasikowski has led the Ducks to a pair of Pac-12 Conference titles and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA tournament
Under Wasikowski, Oregon has compiled a 53-16 (.768) overall record, including a 27-9 (.750) mark in Pac-12 play. The Ducks have also been ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation during his tenure.
In 2019, Oregon won a school-record 15 consecutive games en route to claiming the Pac-12 regular season title with a 20-4 conference record. The Ducks then went on to win the Pac-12 Tournament for the first time in program history before making their second straight trip to the NCAA tournament
In 2020, Oregon once again won the Pac-12 regular season title with an 18-6 conference record. The Ducks then went on to win the Pac-12 Tournament for the second year in a row before making their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament
Wasikowski’s success at Oregon has not gone unnoticed, as he was recently named one of five finalists for the National college baseball Hall of Fame’s Skip Bertman Award, which is given annually to “the national coach of the year” in Division I Baseball
The Turnaround of Oregon Baseball
Oregon baseball coach George Horton has turned the program around in his four years at the helm.
The Ducks have gone from worst to first in the Pac-12 under Horton, and they are currently ranked No. 2 in the nation.
Horton has instilled a new culture of winning in Oregon, and he has the Ducks poised for a deep run in the NCAA Tournament this year.
The Transformation of Oregon Baseball
Oregon baseball had a break out year in 2017, and head coach George Horton is a big reason why.
Since Horton took over the program in 2013, Oregon has won at least 30 games in five of his six seasons. That includes a school-record-tying 46 wins in 2017, when the Ducks went to their first NCAA regional since 2004 and won their first game in an NCAA Regional since 1999.
“We’ve definitely turned the corner,” Horton said. “I think our administration has done a terrific job of supporting us and committed to us.”
One of the biggest changes Horton has made is to the team’s culture. When he arrived, Oregon was coming off two straight losing seasons. The team was talented but undisciplined, and Horton quickly realized he had to change the way things were done if the Ducks were going to be successful.
“We needed to establish a new culture,” Horton said. “One that was based on work ethic, accountability and having pride in what you did.”
Horton also put an emphasis on recruiting players who fit his vision for the program. He wanted players who were tough and competitive, but also had the character and intelligence to be successful at Oregon both on and off the field.
“We recruit kids that we think can not only play baseball at a high level, but that can also succeed academically and socially at Oregon,” Horton said. “That’s been a big part of our success.”
The results speak for themselves. Oregon is now one of the top baseball programs in the Pac-12, and Horton has established himself as one of the best coaches in the country. With another strong recruiting class coming in 2018, the future looks bright for Oregon Baseball
The Reinvention of Oregon Baseball
Since George Horton took over as Oregon’s head baseball coach in 2007, the Ducks have seen a dramatic resurgence in their program.
After years of struggling to compete at the Division I level, Oregon has become a force to be reckoned with in the Pac-12 conference under Horton’s guidance. The Ducks have won three conference championships and made four NCAA tournament appearances in the last six years.
This season, Oregon is once again near the top of the Conference Standings and is primed for another deep run in the postseason. Horton has instilled a winning culture in Eugene, and Duck fans are excited to see what the future holds for their team.
The Rise of Oregon Baseball
Though the Oregon baseball team has seen little success in recent years new head coach Mark Wasikowski is working to change that.
In his first season at the helm, Wasikowski led the Ducks to a 34-26 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament where they narrowly missed out on advancing to the Super Regional round.
The 2019 season was a marked improvement over Oregon’s 2018 campaign, when the team went 27-28 and failed to qualify for the postseason.
And while Wasikowski’s goal is to eventually lead Oregon to a College World Series title, he is also focused on developing his players and helping them reach their potential as student-athletes.
“It’s not just about winning games ” Wasikowski said. “It’s about developing young men and helping them grow into adults.”
Wasikowski’s efforts have already earned him national acclaim, as he was named the 2019 ABCA West Region Coach of the Year.
And with another promising season on the horizon, it appears that Oregon baseball is on the rise under Wasikowski’s leadership.
