In the late 1990’s, college hockey was in a golden age. Powerhouses like Michigan, North Dakota and Boston College were dominant. The National Hockey League (NHL) took notice of the talent coming out of the collegiate ranks. Players like Mike Modano(1st overall, 1988), Chris Drury (72nd overall, 1994), and Bryan Berard (1st overall, 1995) were drafted out of college and became NHL stars. In 1998, the NHL expanded to 30 teams and the number of NHL Draft picks out of college increased.

The Ohio State Buckeyes were a team on the rise in the late 1990’s. Led by players like R.J. Umberger (16th overall, 2001), Ryan Miller (138th overall, 1999), and Matt Anderson (71st overall, 2001), the Buckeyes reached the NCAA tournament four times from 1998 to 2001. The team was coached by John Markell, who replaced Jerry York in 1997.

After a few years of rebuilding, the Buckeyes were back to being a powerhouse in 2006. They won the CCHA regular season title and made it to the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in school history. The Buckeyes were led by their captain, Jason Blake (123rd overall, 1993), who had 43 points that season. goaltender David McKee (65th overall, 2002) also had a great season, posting a .931 save percentage. The Buckeyes lost to eventual National Champion Minnesota-Duluth in the first round of the NCAA Tournament that year.

Despite their success in 2006, things went downhill for Ohio State after that season. They failed to make the NCAA Tournament for four straight years from 2007 to 2010. In 2011, they finally made it back to the NCAA tournament but lost in the first round again. After another losing season in 2012-2013, head coach John Markell was fired and replaced by Steve Rohlik.

Rohlik coached Ohio State for two seasons before he was replaced by current Head Coach Chris Bergeron in 2015. Bergeron led Bowling Green to four NCAA Tournament appearances in his six seasons as Head coach there from 2009 to 2014 before coming to Ohio State
