The Blackjacks are a CEBL expansion team that began play in 2019. The team is led by Head Coach and General Manager Dave Smart, who has led the nearby Carleton Ravens to 14 consecutive U Sports National Championships Some of the Blackjacks’ Top Players include:

– Tyler Ennis A 6’2” guard from Brampton, Ontario, Ennis was drafted 18th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2014 NBA draft He played two seasons in the NBA before spending time with various international teams. He joined the Blackjacks for their inaugural season in 2019.
– Jahmal McQueen: A 6’7” forward from Toronto, McQueen played college basketball at Stony Brook University before spending time with several professional teams in Europe and Latin America. He also played for Canada at the 2015 Pan American Games McQueen joined the Blackjacks for their inaugural season in 2019.
– Negativelam Moko: A 6’9” forward from Toronto, Moko played college basketball at Ryerson University before spending time with several professional teams overseas. He joined the Blackjacks for their inaugural season in 2019.

The Capital City Krew are a semi-professional team that began play in 2013. The team is owned by Terry Thomas, who also owns several other businesses in Ottawa, including a clothing store and a barber shop Some of the Krew’s top players include:

– George Jackson: A 6’5” guard from Toronto, Jackson played College Basketball at Virginia Commonwealth University before spending time with various semi-professional and professional teams overseas. He joined the Krew for their inaugural season in 2013 and was named MVP of the TBL All-Star game in 2016.
– Tyrone Watson: A 6’3” guard from Brampton, Ontario, Watson played College Basketball at Iowa State University re Playing professionally overseas. He joined the Krew for their inaugural season in 2013 and was named to the TBL All-Star Game in 2016 and 2017.

The Ottawa Basketball Scene – The History

The Ottawa Basketball Scene has a long and storied history. The game of basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith a Canadian physical education professor at McGill University in Montreal. It is widely believed that the first game of basketball was played in Ottawa, at the YMCA on Slater Street, in 1892.

The first professional basketball league in Canada was the National Basketball League of Canada, which was founded in Toronto in 1898. The league had six teams, all based in Ontario. One of these teams was the Ottawa Senators, who played their home games at the Dey’s Arena on Rideau Street. The Senators were one of the most successful teams in the league, winning five championships between 1898 and 1906.

In 1906, the Canadian basketball Association was founded, and sensationally, the Senators won the very first championship! The CBA was short-lived however, folding after just two seasons.

The next professional basketball league in Canada was formed in 1912, and again featured a team from Ottawa – the Ottawa Alleghenys. This team played in the National League which was based entirely in eastern Canada. The Alleghenys had some success, winning two championships between 1912 and 1916.

After a few years without a team, basketball finally returned to Ottawa in 1921 with the formation of the National Basketball League of Eastern Canada. This new league included a team from Ottawa called the Reds. The Reds were very successful, winning four championships between 1921 and 1924!

Basketball would take another hiatus from Ottawa until 1929 when a new team called the Ottawas joined the Eastern professional basketball league This team only lasted for one season before folding due to financial difficulties.

It wouldn’t be until 1949 that basketball would make its next appearance in Ottawa with the formation of yet another new league – the Quebec Professional basketball league (QPBL). This time around there were twoOttawa-based teams -the Aces andthe Cardinals. Unfortunately neither team enjoyed much successand both folded after just two seasons..
