Penn State has a rich tradition in basketball, dating back to the early 1900s. The program has produced some of the greatest players in college basketball history, such as Wilt Chamberlain Calvin Booth, and Talor Battle. The team has also won two National Championships (1954 and 1955) and made 27 NCAA tournament appearances.

While the team has had great success on the court, they’ve also had some great jerseys throughout the years. Here are the top five Penn State basketball jerseys in history:

1) The “Blue Ribbon” Jerseys (1976-77)
These jerseys were worn during one of Penn State’s most successful seasons in program history. The team went 27-3 overall and won the Big Ten regular season title. They eventually lost to Marvin Webster and Syracuse in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament

2) The White “Nittany Lions” Jerseys (1982-83)
These jerseys were worn during Penn State’s first ever NCAA tournament appearance. The team went 22-9 overall and finished 4th in the Big Ten regular season standings. They would eventually lose to Arkansas in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament

3) The Blue “Lady Lions” Jerseys (2000-01)
The Lady Lions wore these beauties during their undefeated 26-0 Regular Season campaign. They would eventually lose to Notre Dame in the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament

4) The Cream “Vintage” Jerseys (2017-18)
These jerseys were worn during Penn State’s most recent trip to the NCAA Tournament The team went 21-13 overall and finished 8th in the Big Ten regular season standings before losing to Marquette in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament

In no particular order, here are the top five moments in Penn State basketball history:

1. 1989 NCAA tournament upset of top-seeded Georgetown – The 11th-seeded Nittany Lions stunned the Hoyas, who were led by future NBA Star Alonzo Mourning, in the Opening Round of the tournament. Penn State went on to lose to eventual National Champion Michigan in the Round of 32.

2. 1995 NCAA Tournament upset of fourth-seeded UCLA – Led by future NBA player Jerome Allen, the ninth-seeded Nittany Lions took down UCLA in the opening round of the tournament. Penn State went on to lose to eventual national champion Arkansas in the Round of 32.

3. 2001 NIT championship – Led by future NBA player Joe Crispin, Penn State won four games in five days to capture the National Invitation Tournament championship. The Nittany Lions defeated Georgetown, Florida State Southern Methodist and Notre Dame en route to the title.

4. 2006 NIT Championship – The Nittany Lions captured their second NIT championship with a win over Baylor in the final game Senior Jamelle Cornley was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after averaging 17 points and eight rebounds in four games.

5. 2007 NCAA Tournament upset of fifth-seeded Southern California – In one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history, 11th-seeded Penn State knocked off Southern California who were led by future NBA players Taj Gibson and Nick Young The Nittany Lions went on to lose to eventual national champion Florida in the Round of 32.

In no particular order, these are the top five teams in Penn State Basketball History

1. The 1971-72 team was the first Penn State squad to make the NCAA Tournament They finished with a 22-6 record and were led by All-American guard Jimmy Taylor.

2. The 1977-78 team is considered one of the best in program history. Led by future NBA players Joe Bryant and Eddie Jordan they finished 27-4 and made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament

3. The 1994-95 team featuredAll-American guard Jerry Stackhouse and was the first Penn State squad to win an NCAA tournament game in nearly 20 years. They finished with a 23-8 record.

4. The 2001-02 team was one of the most talented in program history, featuring future NBA players Joe Crispin and Jan van den Berg. They finished 26-7 and made it to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament

5. The recent 2015-16 team is one of the most successful in recent memory, winning 28 games and making it all the way to the NIT Championship game before losing to George Washington

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day and the impending NCAA tournament we here at Onward State have decided to take a look at the top five Basketball Coaches in Penn State history.

1. Dick Harter – Harter led the Nittany Lions to their first ever NCAA tournament appearance in 1971, and is also one of only two coaches in program history to post 20+ wins in four separate seasons. He is perhaps best remembered for his defense-first approach, which helped lead Penn State to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 1971-74.

2. Jerry Dunn – Dunn took over for Harter in 1995 and helped to lead the Nittany Lions back to relevancy with four NCAA Tournament appearances in his seven seasons at the helm. He also guided Penn State to its first ever Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2001, and is one of only two coaches in program history to win an NCAA Tournament game.

3. Ed DeChellis – DeChellis took over for Dunn in 2008 and led the Nittany Lions back to the NCAA Tournament in his second season at the helm. He also guided Penn State to a share of the Big Ten Regular Season championship in 2011, its first conference title since 1996. However, he left Penn State after the 2011 season for Navy, and has since been replaced by Patrick Chambers.

4. Patrick Chambers – Chambers took over for DeChellis prior to the 2012-13 season and has guided the Nittany Lions to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in 2019. He has also helped lead Penn State to a share of two Big Ten regular season championships, and is currently the winningest coach in program history.

5. Bruce Parkhill – Parkhill served as Penn State’s Head Coach from 1986-96, and while he never led the Nittany Lions to an NCAA Tournament appearance, he did help guide them to four NIT appearances, including a trip to the semifinals in 1994. He also won two Big East Coach of the Year awards during his time at Penn State which was a testament to his ability as a coach despite never reaching college basketball’s biggest stage.
