The Tradition
Since its inception in 1909, Prairie View A&M baseball has been a force with which to reckon. The Young Men’s Christian Baseball Organization (now the National Collegiate Athletic Association) was formed in 1906 with the mission of “developing the highest type of student athletes through amateur competition.” In order to achieve this goal, the NCAA established rules and regulations that member institutions agreed to follow. One such regulation was that teams could only play other members of their own conference.
The Prairie View Interscholastic League (PVIL) was one of the first black High School athletic conferences established in the country. At that time, there were only seven member schools: Prairie View Academy, Wiley College, Samuel Huston College, Langston University, Bishop College, Texas College and Jarvis Christian College Despite being relatively young, the PVIL quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the best baseball players in the country.
Prairie View A&M University has a long history of success on the diamond, dating back to 1909 when the team was founded. The Panthers have won 11 conference championships and made 12 NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the College World Series in 1997. Prairie View A&M is also one of only two Historically Black Colleges or universities (HBCUs) to have produced two Major League Baseball players: Willie Horton and Marvin Freeman.
The Future
Prairie View Baseball is committed to providing a great experience for all our players, from those just starting out to those who are looking to take their game to the next level.
