New Additions

The Prairie View A&M University basketball team has made some changes to its roster for the 2017-2018 season Here are the new additions:

-Junior guard Nigel Hawkins from Tyler, Texas. Hawkins was a member of the 2016-2017 Texas All-State Team.

-Sophomore guard Khris Middleton from Byhalia, Mississippi. Middleton was ranked as a four-star recruit by ESPN and 247Sports.

-Redshirt freshman forward Troy Simon from Brooklyn, New York. Simon played his freshman year at Stony Brook University before transferring to Prairie View A&M.

Departures

The Prairie View A&M University men’s Basketball team will have a new look for the 2017-2018 season as head coach Byron Smith looks to reload after losing eight players from last season’s roster.

Gone are leading scorer and rebounder Tre’Lun Banks (13.5 ppg, 8.1 rpg), Second Team All-SWAC selection Gary Blackston (12.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg), and starting point guard Trayvon Reed (7.1 ppg, 2.8 apg), who all exhausted their eligibility. The Panthers will also be without the services of sharpshooter Zachary Hamilton (9.0 ppg, 2.1 rpg), who transferred to the University of Houston along with Ja’corey Williams (6.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg), Khalea Turner-Morris (3.8 ppg, 2.4 rpg) and David Edwards (1.8 ppg, 1.9 rpg), who all opted to transfer to other schools as well.

The only player from last season’s team that is not returning is reserve center Mike Wallace (2.1 ppg, 1.7 rpg), who has decided to pursue a professional career overseas

The Prairie View A&M University men’s basketball team will enter the 2017-2018 season with a new Head Coach Byron Smith. The team will have a lot of experience on the roster, with six seniors and four juniors. Here is a position-by-position breakdown of the team:

Guards: The Panthers will have four scholarship guards on the roster, led by senior Daeshon Francis. Francis was second on the team in scoring last season, averaging 9.5 points per game He will be joined by fellow seniors Marcus Foster and Reggie chamberlain, as well as junior college transfer Troy Thompson.

Forwards: The Panthers will have six forwards on the roster, including four seniors. Senior Trayvon Reed is the team’s returning leading rebounder, averaging 6.2 rebounds per game last season. He will be joined by fellow seniors Jerell Pete, Jordan ice and Louis Munks.

Analysis

The 2017-2018 Prairie View A&M University basketball roster includes ten returners from last season and six new faces. The team is looking to rebound from a disappointing 2016-2017 campaign in which they finished 12-18 overall and 9-9 in conference play

The Panthers will be led by senior guard/forward Davon Haynes and junior guard/forward Troy Thompson. Haynes is the team’s leading returning scorer, averaging 11.5 points per game last season. Thompson is the leading returning rebounder, averaging 5.5 per game.

The new additions to the team are guards Jordan Johnson, Malik Hines, and Jayvon Boyd; forwards Josh Pierre, Rasheed Baptiste, and CJ Washington; and center Kevin Huntley. All six of these players are expected to contribute right away and help the Panthers improve upon last year’s record.
