Purdue University has a long and proud tradition of success in basketball. Quite simply, Purdue Basketball is one of the best programs in the country.

The Purdue Boilermakers have won 22 Big Ten conference championships 10 NCAA tournament appearances, and 2 National Invitation Tournament Championships. The Boilermakers have also produced 3 Consensus First Team All-Americans, 15 Consensus Second Team All-Americans, and 1 Smith College Player of the Year.

Purdue Basketball has a rich history, dating back to the very first season of Purdue University competition in 1896.

History

The Basketball Program at Purdue University began in 1896 with the formation of an intramural team. In 1932, John Wooden then Head Coach at Purdue, became the first coach to lead a team to an undefeated season in college basketball From that point on, basketball at Purdue University has been a proud tradition. The Boilermakers have won 20 conference championships and 3 National Championships and have made 37 NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Early Years

In the early years of the program, Purdue Basketball was not highly regarded. The team spent most of its time in the bottom half of the Big Ten and only once finished higher than fourth under then-coach Ward “Piggy” Lambert. In 1923, Lambert retired due to poor health and was replaced by John Wooden

The Gene Keady Era

Gene Keady was the head coach of the Purdue Boilermakers men’s basketball team from 1980 to 2005. He is one of the winningest coaches in NCAA Division I history, with a career record of 661–252, an average of nearly 21 wins per season. During his time at Purdue, Keady led the Boilermakers to 18 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including six Sweet Sixteen appearances and two Elite Eight appearances. He also won 11 Big Ten regular season championships and five Big Ten Tournament titles. In 1994, he was named National Coach of the Year by Sporting News and ESPN.

The Matt Painter Era

Matt Painter is the current Head Coach of the Purdue Boilermakers men’s Basketball team He has been the Head coach since 2005, and has led the team to five NCAA tournament appearances.

The 2017–18 Purdue Boilermakers men’s basketball team represented Purdue University during the 2017–18 NCAA Division I men’s Basketball season The team played its home games in West Lafayette, Indiana, at Mackey Arena, and competed in the Big Ten Conference. They finished the season 28–6, 14–4 in Big Ten play to finish in a tie for second place. As the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament they defeated Iowa and Ohio State to advance to the Championship game where they lost to Michigan. They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament as the No. 2 seed in the Midwest region. In the tournament, they defeated Cal State Fullerton and Butler to advance to the Sweet Sixteen where they lost to Texas Tech

During his sophomore season, Carsen Edwards emerged as one of the Top Players in College Basketball averaging 18.5 points per game while shooting 42.3 percent from three-point range He was named a consensus second-team All-American and was also named Big Ten conference Men’s basketball player of the Year by both the media and coaches.[1][2]

Purdue had five players drafted in the 2018 NBA draft setting a program record.[3]
