Quinnipiac Baseball: A Program on the Rise

Since 2011, the Quinnipiac Bobcats baseball team has seen a steady rise in both their level of play and their national ranking.

In 2011, the team finished with a record of 24-28 and an East Conference (NEC) record of 12-12. They made it to the NEC tournament, but were eliminated in the first round.

The next year, 2012, was a turning point for the program. The team finished with a record of 37-19 and an NEC record of 16-4, good enough for first place in the regular season standings. They went on to win the NEC tournament and receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament Although they were ultimately eliminated in the regional tournament this was a significant step forward for the program.

Since then, Quinnipiac has only continued to improve. In 2013, they finished with a record of 41-17 and an NEC record of 19-1, again winning first place in the Regular Season standings and the NEC tournament. This time, they made it all the way to the NCAA Super Regional where they narrowly lost to South Carolina

Last season, 2014, was another banner year for Quinnipiac baseball. The team finished with a record of 47-11 and an NEC record of 20-2, once again winning both first place in the regular season standings and the NEC Tournament Championship They received an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and made it all the way to the College World Series where they lost to Vanderbilt in Extra Innings

The 2015 season is just getting underway, but Quinnipiac is already off to a great start. They currently have a record of 19-5 overall and 7-0 in conference play With another NEC championship almost certainly in their sights, it will be interesting to see how far they can go this year.

The journey started in 2001, when the Bobcats hired John Delaney as their head coach Delaney had previously served as an assistant at La Salle, where he helped lead the team to four straight NCAA tournament appearances.

Under Delaney’s leadership, Quinnipiac quickly became a force to be reckoned with. The team won 20 or more games in five of his first six seasons, including a school-record 31-win season in 2006. They also made their first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament in 2006, losing to eventual national runner-up Georgia in the regional semifinals.

The Bobcats have continued to build on that success in recent years They’ve won 30 or more games in four of the last five seasons, and they made another appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2011. They’ve also produced a number of Major League Baseball draft picks including current Boston Red Sox pitcher Anthony Ranaudo.

In 2016, they won 36 games, their most in a single season since moving to Division I in 1998, and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Under head coach John Delaney, the Bobcats have become one of the top programs in the East Conference In 2015, they won the conference regular season title and followed that up with another Conference Championship in 2016. They have been to the Northeast conference tournament Championship game three times in the last four years, winning it all in 2015.

This past season, Quinnipiac averaged over 1,000 fans per game, a significant increase from when they were averaging just over 200 fans per game just a few years ago. On the mound, junior right-hander Luke Welke has been dominant, posting a 0.90 ERA in 10 innings pitched Welke has also struck out 15 batters, while only walking 2.

Offensively, Quinnipiac has been powered by junior third baseman Mickey Amoratis, who leads the team with a .349 batting average six home runs and 27 RBIs. Senior first baseman Nick Guerrera is also having a strong season, batting .340 with four homers and 26 RBIs.

The Bobcats will look to keep their winning ways going as they close out the regular season and head into the NEC tournament. With another strong showing this season, Quinnipiac is poised to cement its place among the Northeast’s top baseball programs.
