Ray Young: The Best basketball player You’ve never heard Of
Ray Young was a shooting guard who played in the NBA from 1987 to 1995. He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers in the second round of the 1987 NBA draft and played for the Pacers, Charlotte Hornets Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves His best season was 1989-90, when he averaged 12.7 points and 3.1 assists per game for the Pacers.
Young was known for his great shooting ability and was one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA during his playing career. He made 40.8 percent of his three-point attempts for his career and shot over 45 percent from beyond the arc in four different seasons. Young was also a very good free throw shooter, making 85 percent of his attempts from the Charity Stripe for his career.
Although he was a very good player Young never became a star in the NBA. He had a few good seasons but was never able to take his game to an All-Star level. Part of the reason for this may have been that he played on some bad teams during his career. The Pacers were not a good team when he was drafted by them and he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets midway through his fourth season when it became apparent that they were not going to be contenders anytime soon.
The Hornets were not much better than the Pacers and Young only lasted two and a half seasons with them before being traded to the Denver Nuggets The Nuggets were a good team but they already had two All-Star caliber Shooting Guards in Dale Ellis and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. As a result, Young only averaged 9.1 points per game during his one season with Denver before being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves where he finished out his career.
Young had a solid NBA Career but it is safe to say that he is not among the most famous players from his era. He was a good shooter and a solid player but he never reached superstar status in the league.
