The Early Years

The Red Wing Baseball Association (RWBA) was founded in 1884, just four years after the town of Red Wing, Minnesota itself was founded. At the time, the town’s population was just over 3,000 people. TheRWBA was founded by a group of local businessmen who wanted to provide a recreational outlet for the young men of the town. The first game played by a team representing the RWBA was against a team from nearby Hager City, Wisconsin on May 17, 1884. The game was played on a field located on what is nowv the campus of Northwestern College. The RWBA continued to grow in popularity in the late 1880s and early 1890s, playing games against teams from other small towns in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

In 1893, theRWBA decided to join the new Interstate League, which had been formed that year. The league consisted of teams from Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The RWBA were one of the original six teams in the league. The league only lasted two seasons before disbanding, but during its short existence, it helped to increase the popularity of baseball in Red Wing and other small towns in the Midwest.

After the Interstate League dissolved, the RWBA continued to play games against other local teams until 1900 when it joined the Mississippi Valley League (MVL), another newly-formed league consisting of teams from Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Again, theRWBA were one of the original six teams in the league. The MVL only lasted two seasons as well before disbanding.
