It all started in 1884 when the Richmond Base Ball Club was founded. They were a member of the National League’s Eastern Division and played their home games at the Union Grounds. The team was successful early on, winning the National League pennant in 1886. But by the early 1890s, the team had become one of the worst in the league and attendance had dropped off. The team was dissolved in 1892.

But baseball in Richmond didn’t die entirely. In 1914, a new Richmond Base Ball Club was formed and joined the Virginia League. The team played its home games at Lakeside Park and was made up mostly of semi-professional players. The team struggled financially and only lasted one season before folding.

It would be nearly 30 years before baseball would return to Richmond. In 1941, the Richmond Colts were formed as a Minor League affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies The team played its home games at Parker Field and soon became one of the most popular teams in the league. The Colts won several championships during their time in Richmond and were eventually promoted to the Triple-A National League in 1954.

The Colts only played four seasons in Triple-A before moving to Toronto, Canada, where they became known as the Maple Leafs Baseball wouldn’t return to Richmond again until 1985 when the Double-A AA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles moved to town and became known as the RVA Tides.
