Barletta began his career with the New York Rangers where he played for three seasons. He then moved to the Pittsburgh Penguins where he played for two seasons. In 2008, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning where he played for one season. In 2009, he returned to the Rangers, where he played for two more seasons.

He made his NHL debut with the Penguins in 2008 and went on to win a Stanley Cup with the team in 2009. After a few seasons with the Penguins, Barletta was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2012. He played for the Lightning for two seasons before being traded again, this time to the Chicago Blackhawks where he currently plays.

Barletta, 37, was drafted by the Rangers in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut with the team in 2006. He played four seasons with the Rangers before being traded to the Bruins in 2010. He played six seasons with the Bruins before being bought out of his contract in 2016.
Since then, Barletta has been playing Professional Hockey in Europe. He spent two seasons with HC Lugano in Switzerland and one season with HC Fribourg-Gotteron. He most recently played for HC Ambri-Piotta of the Swiss National League A.
In 14 seasons of NHL play, Barletta tallied 39 goals and 87 assists for a total of 126 points. He also appeared in 18 Playoff Games tallying two goals and two assists.
