The Spartans currently compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I as a member of the Mountain West Conference The Spartans play their home games at the Event Center Arena on the university’s campus in San Jose California.

The program enjoyed success in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, winning conference championships in 1896, 1903, 1915, 1916, 1921, 1922 and 1923. The team has only won one conference championship since 1923 and has never made an NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Tournament appearance. The Spartans have appeared in three NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Tournaments (1959, 1962 and 1963). They have also appeared in one National Invitation Tournament (NIT), four CollegeInsider.com postseason tournaments (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015) and five NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournaments (1942, 1946, 1947 and 1950).
