The History of the Mountain West Conference

The Mountain West Conference (MWC) is a collegiate athletic conference which operates in the Western United States It participates in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The MWC’s football teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly Division I-A), while its men’s and women’s Basketball teams compete in Division I.

The conference was founded on July 1, 1999, with nine members: Colorado State University Brigham Young University the University of Utah the University of New Mexico, San Diego State University, UNLV, and Wyoming. The United States Air Force Academy and the United States Naval Academy subsequently joined the conference as non-football members on August 24, 2020.

With historical ties to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC), the MW has roots back to 1938. Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, it is one of two conferences to be based in that city.
