SCU Baseball: A Team to Be reckoned With
The Santa Clara University Broncos baseball team is flying under the radar this season, but they are definitely a team to watch The Broncos are currently 27-17 overall and 12-9 in the West Coast Conference, good for fourth place. They have already surpassed their win total from last season and with two weeks left in the regular season they appear to be headed to their first winning season since 2014.
The Broncos are led by junior catcher Nate Johnson, who is hitting .338 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs. Johnson is one of four Broncos hitting over .300 this season, along with seniors Matt O’Neill (.323) and Andre Nnebe (.302) and junior Chris Williams (.301). The pitching staff has also been solid, with a team ERA of 3.66. Senior closer Max Deering has a 0.92 ERA and 12 saves in 25 appearances this season.

The Santa Clara University (SCU) Baseball Team is a team of destiny. After an 0-4 start to the season, the team has won 14 of their last 16 games, including a 10-game Winning Streak head coach Rusty Filter has instilled a never-quit attitude in his players, and it has paid off in a big way. The team is now 14-8 overall and just two games out of first place in the West Coast Conference (WCC).
The key to the team’s success has been their pitching. They have the second best ERA in the WCC at 3.22, and they have only given up more than three runs in a game twice all season. Senior ace Holden Powell has been leading the way with a 7-1 record and a 2.48 ERA. He has been named the WCC Pitcher of the Week twice this season and was recently named a preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball News.
The offense has also been clicking lately, scoring six or more runs in eight of their last ten games. Senior catcher Michael Davis has been leading the charge, hitting .381 with four home runs and 23 RBIs on the season. He was recently named the WCC Player of the Week after hitting .583 with two home runs and eight RBIs in a three-game series against Pepperdine.
